Now I have a problem with the power in the garage!

Every time it rained my lights used to flicker.....thought the house was haunted!

Eventually investigated....they'd run regular T&E cable inside a plumbing pipe to the out building. As if that wasn't bad enough they had some ancient plug thing with a screw cap on it. One day I unscrewed the cap to look inside....water poured out and there was a loud bang and all the electric went off!!!

Needless to say the whole house was rewired including armoured cable to the garage with rated outdoor plugs.....no more ghosts!

They'd wired the out building into the living room ring main....was a handy plug on the living room wall so they just drilled a hole through the back of the socket!

you should not have any resistance between the L & N on the installation side with the power off. Do not try to measure with the supply energised.

With both ends of the cable disconnected you should have non or very little resistance between conductors

Strictly speaking, none or very little CONDUCTANCE, infinite resistance.

I had 59ohms across the balck and red that feeds the garage I would have thought it should be infinite too.

The cable goes into a pipe in the garage then into the house so it is possible something is ammis under gtound with the cable but I would expect the fuse to blow in the house where the supply comes from not the ring on my garage

If the supply cable had earth to neutral fault there is a slight possibility that it could cause RCD tripping on the outgoing side in some situations. But not an L to N on the incoming. What are the N to E and L to N readings?
Sound like you need someone who can do some accurate testing to see whats going on.

No this is another cable that one with the joint was replaced with armour back to the main CU.

if its 56ohms something is either plugged in or something is faulty this is probably only couple hours fault finding

You might need to check it a higher voltage.

56ohms was the reading from the incoming supply into the garage from the house

was it live or dead? you might have been measuring the substation

Also if the supply was just turned off and not fully isolated you were seeing something on a different circuit.

no the DP switch in the CU would not turn back on so i broke it trying!

so when you measure the DP switch its definitely open circuit and functioning and when its unwired its not shorting internally?

have you unwired the dp switch and taken the supply cable out at the CU and confirmed the supply cable isnt damaged
