Newall DRO to POS Colchester Triumph

I had a 12Kw servo on the CNC lathe but kept blowing drives so had to put it back the way it was originally.
Shame as it was brilliant via the servo, seems there is a weakness about the Allen Bradley HV DSD servo drives, I have had a few fail on different machines, the standard voltage ones seem to be good but sadly they only go to 3kW.
I have an older DDM style on the Triumph, it is 240v 3 phase and seems to have stood the test of time, it is 7.5Kw drive.

It most certainly did, as said the first week I got it I had to use it for 8hrs a day for a week, that spurred me on to fitting the servo in short time

You don't come across a 7.5kw servo motor and drive on ebay very often for £100

It is only a 5kw motor but yes you used to get them dirt cheap, I got the 12.5kw servo motor and the 22kw drive, both brand new for under £250.
As said it used to be quite a common occurrence until some idiot told people that he was using DSD servo drives and motors on his Mach3 retrofits The prices went sky high after that because other people started buying them, if only I could keep my bleeding mouth shut

Those Gamet bearings are quite happy at that speed. Might be tempted to do that to my old Triumph one day. What's torque like on those drives at low speed? Or is that why you part of at silly rpm

Torque is is a bit low at slower speeds, fine for turning but for bigger drills it is lacking but it is a 4000rpm motor geared down 2:1 and I would have been better gearing 2.5:1 or even 3:1.
If I had geared 3:1 I could have still got 1,300 rpm which is way more than I use, 4:1 would actually have suited me fine as I am very rarely above 1000rpm

First chance I have had this week to get some time with the new DRO.
I made a plate up to lower the DRO and it is now at a much better height as it means I don't have to tilt my head to look at the screen through the lower part of my varifocals.

I then set up some tools and it is very easy to do and works extremely well so now I can use in a similar way to the CNC, just call a tool and it will show the correct diameter it is currently at. Same for the Z coords
If you then put into Zero mode you can then have a tool loaded, take a facing cut and zero the Z DRO and when you call all other tools they will also be zero at the face.

I have printed out some stickers for the tool rack and will also put some on the tool blocks as well, just to keep track of which tool is which.

I also got the drill rack shifted from the end of the bed so now I can use the full travel; that the new DRO scale allows me to.

Only problem is I have loads more drills so not sure what I am going to do with them as I just don't have any more available space

Aye, seems to be and the ease of fitting is excellent. Shame the supplied parts for fitting are not the best. Fine for the Z axis but not the X and as it is supposedly a machine specific kit they really should be.
That is a minor niggle I suppose but I spent a good few hours trying to work out how I could get the X to fit with the supplied parts and in the end I just made my own.

Really impressed with this DRO.
As said I set up a load of tools last week and today I set up a reference position.
What is that? it is a place you move the saddle and cross slide to that you can repeat to within 2.5mm on X and 6mm on Z and then you can set that as the reference point. So I move the X fully out and Z fully to chuck and set that as my reference.
I then switched off the DRO, moved the X axis about 100mm and then switched the DRO back on. Obviously it had lost position so I moved X and Z to the positions I had set up the Ref to, pressed F4 key, went to Find Ref and chose X and then loaded a tool and took a cut.

I mentioned in an earlier thread that I am converting my 10EEs drive from motor generator to AC Brushless Servo. Finally have gotten started on it. I now have all the parts for the motor. I am using a 2kw Mitsubishi Servo with a 3.5kw control. Got the control, encoder cable, and the motor off...

Next up, I put tool 2 in but had just put a new insert in it.
Took a cut at 37mm dia according to the DRO and this is what I got.

So cutting a bit undersize now with the new insert so decided to try the Quick edit for the tool, moved the axis back to where the DRO read 37mm then edited to read 36.941mm and then moved the axis to 36mm on DRO and took another cut, this is what I got.

Aye, not so cheap nowadays, got some Samsung motors and drives from there but now they have doubled in price.
