And i need to ask my uncle to confirm things, however i seem to remember if it left the garage you had to pay for a retest. Its vague in my memory but i seem to remember things like split brakes hoses you could not drive it legally home. But this is 50 years ago we are talking about.

@doubleboost I got mine through today as well with no advisories cat refited and egr refitted before test not bad for 206000 miles

Don't know if it's right or not (and haven't trawled through the lists) but I thought that regarding cat/egr so long as it looked alright, it should be alright? As in they don't check that an egr is working just that if it should be present, it is. Same with cats - don't look inside the box, just that the box is there.

Seeing as you're already admitting to fiddling the system, might save time removing/refitting?

I'm not in the trade, just want to know where I stand from a vehicle owners point of view, how does all this work in the real world.

Like with many things nowadays, the people who make/write the rules don't actually do the job,....some aspects are a bit vague.

Correct it is a visual check not sure what you mean by fiddling the system they were refited because they are now now required for the test and will stay there were as before they were not should I say I was moving with the times

Ah, fair enough, my mistake!

But yea, I'm sure there are plenty of people who have just bypassed egrs and gutted cats. It would be tricky for the former to be detected but I can envisage the introduction of a "sniffer" designed to check the byproducts of a working cat and therefore detect a missing/underperforming one.

I reckon I can smell the slightly"sweet" smelling exhaust of a catalised diesel. Would make sense it could be probed.

Does swapping the engine from a 2 litre 4 cylinder to a 3.9 litre V8 count ?

its something to do with the 8 point system so if you score more than that for originality you can get away with an engine change no probs.
the issues seem to start start when you mod the chassis and frame or fit different axles and gearboxes as well as an engine change.

I think on points I may fail as it's had the back axle, gearbox and engine swapped as well as upgraded brakes etc etc so it's got plenty of non-original parts but most of the parts fitted are the same as what was fitted to different models of my car back in the day so who knows if it counts as a modification or what.

It would probably need a person who is in to that type of car to know what was original and what is not. Obviously engine size would be easy enough to check on but the rest may not be

Well it's like this... it's now got a LT77 5 speed gearbox but was originally fitted with a 4 speed box, but the LT77 5 speed was fitted to the later cars, the rear axle has been swapped again to an item that was fitted to later cars, the engine is a Rover V8 which again was an option back in the day...

I sold a 1978 two door Range Rover rolling chassis to a chap from Holland who was going to put his later body on it as they have a 25 year rule for tax exemption. He turned up with a books of data and checked the serial numbers on the axles, gearbox and engine as well as chassis. He confirmed that the engine was a Sd1 item but everything else was the original components. Seems the Dutch authorities do the same sort of check when granting tax exemption and you are only allowed one none original item

My daughter's partner had a landrover in for a respray and a few little body work jobs it was registered as a series 2 but looked identical to the very last landrover to roll of the production line !!!

I read recently that if its looks like its been cut you need to provide evidence it was cut to clean it.......not sure how true it is..

As long as it was cut open to clean it that is ok
I would just advise on it
This DPF is being blown out of all proportion
It is not just a case of ripping the guts out of it
Propper software "fiddling is also required"
I have only ever failed one diesel on emissions
In fact, it was that bad I refused to test it

Thats the point John.
Altering the software means if that part is ever tested it will need reverting....it all costs money.

People would not be messing if they were a sensible replacement price like an exhaust is. But 3k is a pure joke....

Mine has just passed with both gone but it went through on the old test, Friday before they changed.....
