New gaming monitor

This is a 34" curved screen and I feel far more comfortable with it compared to my previous 31" flat screen.

I have a pair of those Dell 34" curved screens...makes a massive difference to my eyes. I don't use them for gaming so no idea how good they are with motion stuff though.

....you need to get the desk arms to go with them....saves a bunch of desk space too.

Sorry . . . am I the one to be rather bemused by the need to spend close on 300 quid on a monitor for a 9 yr old to play games on . . . ?

I mean, it's your money, but maybe just stand back a touch . . .

If a sense of perspective isn't gained from that, then CCL in Drighlington will probably have something suitable for a lot less, with some left over to pay the electric bill for having pcs, games and monitors on . . .

I appreciate your sentiment and it's not that I am rich but we are trying to get him of his phone for a start.
But he doesn't just use it for gaming. He uses Google a lot to search for things they are doing at school.

Apart from all that he needs a new monitor anyway and if the consensus is similar to your question I am happy to pay less if something more suitable is available.

It's really gonna depend on the rest of his PC as if it's something basic it won't have enough power to drive the framerate that high in games anyway.
For a 9yo just using it for odd games and google yes something fairly basic, 60/75hz, IPS or VA panel will probably be fine.

The 9 year old should be given a ZX spectrum with 11” black and white tv and a dodgy cassette player to see how we used to attempt to play computer games.

And an original version of Duke Nukem, or Wolfenstein, to see how great the graphics were 20+ years ago.

No it's really 240hz, some gaming monitors are, the reason that one is so cheap is the response time for switching the screen is so slow that while it theortically does 240hz there's so much blur by then its worse than most competitors 120/144hz models.

Just run vsync to lock frames to refresh rate. Unless he's a secret egame star it's really not going to bother him.

My lad did Computer Science at Sussex. 24/7 access to top end pc stuff in what they called "the labs".

One of the societies there was Retro Gaming when herds of nerds/blerds and the odd, no doubt very popular gerd would turn up and play Atari, VIC 20, SNES etc.

I'm glad to say he only went once.

And whilst we're touching on those old games - you played those on your big old CRTs which had decent refresh rates and much faster response times than flat panel LCD's had for quite a while...which is why people are going for faster responding panels these days, to get back to what we had, it's hardly a new thing.

I still don't think you can beat 4 of you sat round an old N64 playing Goldeneye with the TV screen split into 4.
Add in a lot of beers and decent takeaway and you could go all night ( often did)
They might have better graphics these days, but 4 pale kids sat in their bedrooms playing each other online just don't live up to that

I'm Playing Quake 2 with full ray tracing still.
Nvidia revamped it to take advantage of the new hardware.

You see I was not aware of that. I have only ever had cheap second hand monitors.

I used to run fixed frequency 21 inch monitors and special.graphics cards.
God they were heavy..

I'm not sure what happened to that first bit about teens and hifi, it was supposed to be on another post, and was meant to say 'good screens are like good hifi, never listen to one you can't afford'.

's not really what online gaming is for a lot of people it's as social as anything else, I've got 2 lots of friends met through online gaming and are married to each other now, my own better half of 2+ years I met through online gaming. I'm afraid the old 'nerd' and other crap that gets spewed on here is well out of touch, most adults under 40-50 these days game online for recreation. There's a reason it's a multi billion dollar industry with meetups all over.
It's rather ironic for people that sit at home talking about welding online in their spare time to take digs at people for gaming online as somehow being nerdy or antisocial, tbfh...
