New Defender

Apparently the announcement of the new defender is 8pm this evening.

H&S chose this time in the hope that people will be sat on the sofa so they won't fall of their chair laughing and hurt themselves when another overpriced Chelsea tractor is announced,

It'll be impressive whatever it looks like. Land Rover are at the top of their game when it comes to 4x4 technology. Their marketing team have also got it bang on when it comes to their customer base. They want top of the range 4x4s and Land Rover have shifted their market focus to cater for it. I've said it on a few posts on other forums - if the Defender "lovers/enthusiasts" had bought a new one every 3-4yrs then LR would almost certainly have done a minor redesign to accomodate up-to-date safety features and continued selling it. The reality was they sold approx. 20,000 a year worldwide and that is not sustainable for a mostly hand built car.

I'd love one, but couldnt afford one so got a Disco 3 instead - does everything a 110 defender would but has all the modern qualities such as comfort, watertight, autobox and is fantastic off road!

Perhaps this could be viewed another way....did they not miss a trick keeping up todate when the Hilux etc started overhauling their commercial market 30 or so years ago.

No one knows why JLR did it the way they did, I doubt they kept the Defender going to keep enthusiasts happy but rather because it was synonymous with Land Rover. The decision to stop will have been financial without a doubt.

If I could afford a D5 commercial or a new Defender there would be one on my driveway, I can't so my D2 is outside, used and abused every day. Yes i need to weld the inner wings but the chassis doesn't need touching. It is 16 years old so not really complaining if i'm honest

Im on D2BC, I am repairing rather than replacing, in fact if it wasn't for the weather I would have already done it

There's also the promised Grenadier Land Rover to be produced by INEOS. Will be curious what they pull out the hat.

I think what happened to the Land Rover is what happened to many cult cars. There may be a strong enthusiast following but the manufacturers depend on a mass consumer following. When that's gone then it's just not viable. Also cars need to be designed to comply with regs from the ground up, so as regulations get updated eventually the car can't keep up and has to be completely re-designed from scratch.

Modern western militaries no longer use regular 4x4s, they are all highly specialist vehicles now.

Too easy to keep on the rd and too many parts available for LR, manufacturers dont like you mending vehicles. No money in that.
