New chucks

My 3 and 4 jaw chucks dont hold parts as well as they should. They seem to be bell mouthed and parts can move under medium/heavy cuts. I could try regrinding the jaws but I think it'd be a waste of time, so I want a new one.

4 jaw, 125-160mm and under £200 please

Zoro dont have any 4 jaws, but they do have the discount... Are Indexa chucks good?

I have a few indexa chucks, they are good for the money ime... not pratt or bison quality or accuracy but good enough for general use

Gloster dont have any 5" 4 jaws listed but I'll send a message.

Any shops I can look at for prices of Bisons?

A big advantage would be a 4 jaw with reasonably priced soft jaws available.

To suit the item being held? stepped jaws can be a pain cant remember why. I dont use the 4 jaw that often, partly as mine is not much good.

Better with a 3 jaw with 2 part jaws and if you have a mill you can easily make your own soft jaws up. When they get too small you just weld a chunk of steel to the top or make some more

Its tempting to get a cheapy off amazon and returns are easy if its no good. Problem is how do you measure if its no good, and was mine always bad?

+1 You'll fast realise if it's any good or not. Concentricity is easy measured, and workholding checking for bellmouth can be done before its even fitted to the lathe.

I've always had a sneaking admiration for Sanou products, I've had a couple of cheap drill chucks and they've been as good as any Rohm or Jacobs, unlike 99% of the rest of chinese imported chucks.

Not sure, my 4 jaw appears fine on softer stuff, only with en19 and chromed bar that it cant bite into, where I have seen any problems - parts moving, and parting. I dont know how you'd measure that. Chuck something up, dti on it and pull it around?

I have a P:ratt Burnerd 'Grip-o-meter' that measures the clamping force of chuck jaws. Really intended for hydraulic operated CNC lathe chucks it transmits an IR signal to a second unit in the tailstock. Scary how the grip reduces with increasing RPM due to centrifugal force of the jaws. It's a bit temperamental in the battery department as a previous owner left flat batteries in it.

I have a second much simpler one that just uses a pressure gauge and three small hydraulic cylinders but you can't read it when the chuck is spinning !
