@ajlelectronics Sorry if I've missed it but have you had much experience on canal boats or cruisers?
Some, but experience comes with doing it!
No point in buying one before trying it out first. Hire one out for a week and see if it is something you and your family could enjoy long term.
I have played on a friend's narrowboat and found it straightforward.
And as others have said, look into the long term costs of ownership.
I have done that and it is affordable, probably more so than a narrowboat. However the cost is not a big issue, as I have said before, I don't burn or spray my money and this will improve my physical and mental health.
or take a couple of foreign holidays instead.
I think that I have had my fill of foreign holidays, with all the attendant hassle and deliberate obstruction by border controllers in other places.
That being said there is a constant pool of new customers so a decent boat will sell quickly. With the Shannon Erne waterway meaning you can travel the length of Ireland by boat there is a big demand for boats.
It can be used for a pleasant weekend without even starting the engine, the environment would be far more pleasant than stuck inside four walls. I am hoping that it might get 'indoors out into the fresh air too, as she rarely goes outside if she can help it.
