Today I started the lower half of the compound slide. A few high spots to start with that I took out with the straight edge. Now using the freshly scraped top half to see what's what...

Today I did some scraping on the gib strip.
It took a little longer than expected. But it's nice and flat with good oil control.

Had enough of groundwork for one day. So I had an hour doing some more scraping on the bottom half of the Harrison compound slide. Almost there....

Today I did a few hours of scraping on the dovetails.

Today I finished the compound slide scraping and ready for paint. All the fittings have now been conditioned. A days work sorting the fittings and didn't feel like doing it as I got a faffn cold.

It is time consuming but I do find it enjoyable. It's not mine..I did consider doing a channel but not sure yet.

Scraping looks nice, if i can ask how have you confirmed its coplaner to the with the cross slide

No, that's Matthew Look up in the wilds of Yorkshire I believe. I think he has more patience than Spencer.
He's refurbishing a Holbrook at the moment.

Doesn't much matter on a lathe slide but it is because we put it on parallels on my surface plate on parallels and went over it with a dial gauge.

Hes doing a good job with geometry being paramount.
He was taught to scrape by a ex craven man

But its important to keep the swivel parallel with slide.

How do you get the parts so shiny? Do you use a tumbler or similar?

Surly if the compound is sloped and you cut using it the tool will not remain on the centre line of the spindle axis

The compound isn't sloped.
The underside compound has been checked with a surface plate. Parallels. And a very fine dti. It's also factory scraped. It's as flat as flat can get. All the ways and tails have been checked and measured. The top of the cross slide is also factory scraped. In fact this machine has better alignment than some modern day equivalents. Not bad for a pre war machine.. also this machine isn't a toolroom lathe. It's a lathe that's been designed to take metal down quickly and hence its mass. When the lathe is complete and running it will run true and accurate and hold good alignment. In fact I will demonstrate this and be willing to put money on it. I am not a professional machine tool restorer but I know enough to be confident in restoring all my machines.
