You can set up 50 tools offsets into them and it will repeat when you swap tools to within the tolerance of the toolpost you have, so if an accurate toolpost then it means good repeatability. If there is a slight discrepancy then it is easy enough just to put in set mode, take a cut and adjust the offset again by typing in the measured value. Are the Newall dro's absolute, do they always know where they are?
Just that you "typed the required dimension into the Dro". No way I could do that without taking a cut first to get referenced in.
I've a lot to learn when it comes to getting the best out of my Dro.
I used the 3jaw for the first one and it came out OK, but this one had a 3 or 4 thou runout between the OD and ID and I didn't have much spare material to skim off it so I had to clock it to the ID!Man, 4 jaws are for irregular shapes when you have an AutoStrong with soft jaws,
I've got plenty to learn too Yeah when I say that, what I meant was, measure the diameter, touch on, and then input the measured dimension. Yeah you still have to touch on, or skim cut and measure. Are the Newall dro's absolute, do they always know where they are?

How about a simple tool-holder mount and use the tool height adjustment to line it up? A dovetail on the end of anything rectangular that will fit in your tool post.View attachment 293519
I have 3 DTI stands now... one "good" one that has a feeble magbase, one Mitutoyo with a damaged mag lever, and one "bad" china special which has the universal joint design... and it's the only one that can clamp the Tesa 8thou lever indicator, which is unfortunate cos the fine-adjust screw is too cheap to work properly. Bah.
I can see a Noga or similarly decent joint-style stand being bought soon... the problem being, trying to find one! Or I could get a dovetail mount for one of the others... for my needs it would be fine...
You still need an adjustable arm, as you only get 1" of height adjustment in the toolpost It's fine, I just need a dovetail mounting end for the Mitutoyo stand, and live with the broken lever (it doesn't affect function)How about a simple tool-holder mount and use the tool height adjustment to line it up? The Mercer stand has a feeble magbase but works well with the 1" DTI I have.
I hadn't thought of that... of course it makes sense! But I still like mag bases and arms, it's what I knowI have one that I've found it very useful, you can use centre height for inside and out! Just rotate the holder so that the indicator is facing you, an "1 of adjustment is ample!

Hi. I own a m400. Looking for gap piece my self.... any idea where. can't find one . So far. Thanks.. DibbsJust realised i'm mixing up your M300 thread with @scottmk1's M350 rebuild thread but between you there's a lot of knowledge. I've only now just clicked that the screwcutting gearbox is completely modular from the head, and the more I look, the less daunting it looks to be able to pull the shafts out and strip it all down into sections.
I've had a cost for the grinding and scraping work, I'll have to keep it private i think, yes it's more than it used to be, but it's probably a similar value-for-money, as the value of good nick lathes are only going upwards.
The unknowns are:
- The headstock gearing and bearings. The oil looks clear enough and it sounds well, so I'm reasonably confident it's in OK nick. I don't want to touch the internals at all, if possible
- The cross slide lead screw. Brian at blue diamond mentioned a cost for a new screw, almost like he expected it to be knackered.
- Any nasties I find in the apron. It SEEMS ok. Again, I don't really want to touch the internals.
- I might need a new pinion gear, but we'll see.
I'm still talking myself into doing this but the more I look and think and ponder, the more I want to do it.
you'll need to scrape it in if you do find oneHi. I own a m400. Looking for gap piece my self.... any idea where. can't find one . So far. Thanks.. Dibbs
If you put an ad up on Facebook marketplace and ring around the machinery dealers you will eventually find one from a scrap lathe. As brad says, you'll have to scrape it or grind it for the vees to fit, also maybe some milling of the base to adjust the height.Hi. I own a m400. I'd highly recommend getting blue diamond machinery to do the rebuild work
I got mine from a facebook wanted adThank u all very much.. Dibbs in llanelli..
