MT2 Tap holder

Jacobs super chuck, mine hasn't let go on much. Alot of variables when it comes to tapping though.

For small taps the collet should be enough, if its tight and the tap slips it would probably have broken in a square holder

depends on how much you use something as to whether you by it or not. you may spend a fortune just to have it sat there for years and done a one off job :dontknow:

On The List, future things I will make is a rotary broach, and then with that some square tap socket adaptors, which will fit in the floating mt2 die holder. Its a long list and those are near the bottom...

I could probably make some inserts to fit the floating 2mt die holder i have just no time.

I did but don’t own one. I do it by hand but with a sprung follower in the tail stock against the tap. If the headstock is under power, you can hold the tap wrench and it’ll cut. If you feel it bind, let go. You’re like a human clutch!

I’m between lathes at the moment but when I get another I’ll get a proper thing. @8ob be interested to see what the Chinese one is like

Snag with all of these is you have no "feel" when using the smaller taps. It can easily end in tears.
A tap wrench and a simple sprung follower in the chuck is my preference and for the really small taps I made a special sprung follower for the tailstock that sits just on the point of the small taps. You have a lathe, you can easily make one. I don't like to put taps in chucks, no give.

Do you have a picture of you sprung follower please? sounds like a fun project

Having now actually watched a bit of the video, he is making a meal of the job.

In the link above to these sprung guides the smaller of the two is reversible to a female end.

Ideally it would be nice to have it with a 2MT shank saves fitting it into a chuck

Faster in the chuck, you are not winding another tool in and out. If you want to make it fit the tailstock just buy a No2 MT blank arbour and build one into it.
Or buy THIS KIT and modify it to suit, bit of an expensive exercise though.

Blank arbors are a very under-appreciated asset to any lathe. As you say, one is ideal for a spring-loaded tap guide. Another use is a dedicated centre drill holder. Similarly, a spotting drill holder. If you can find one with a big plain part, a Weldon (Rotabroach) holder is easy to make.

The micro ones by Arc are cheap enough and as you point out are double-ended so you can have one of each gender to suit any tap.

I am not sure why anyone would need a rotary broach to adapt a die holder insert to take a tap. Just bore the insert to the tap shank diameter and loctite in two opposing grub screws set to the A/F size of the tap.

I would hold a pin chuck with your m2 tap in your tailstock chuck

Get the thread started with the tap in the drill chuck, when it starts slipping use a spring centre in the dimple on the end of the tap to keep it straight and an adjustable spanner on the square of the tap to stop it spinning. No need for any fancy gizmos.

If you're really brave you can wedge the spanner on the bed & tap under power!
