he would only have three wheels then.I was under the impression that no spare wheel was not a fail. So take it out.

My experience of MOT centres in NI is they are very much a stickler for the details, all they do is test and they test a lot of vehicles each day, there is no leeway given at all.
I doubt they would pass it.

I know another set of 20s I have don't fit my 600.
But I do have another set of 18s. Given the 18 spare clears the calipers then the 18s may work as temporary swap I'll test fit one on the front tomorrow evening

Not in the same league, but my MG ZS had a standard steel spare that wouldn't fit over the front calipers so if I had a flat front I would have to replace it with one of the rear alloys and use the spare on the rear, luckily I never had to that as it would mean jacking the car up twice.

The last of the 'proper' Minis with the wide 13" Sportspack alloys came with a 12" steel spare wheel which was only to be fitted to the rear which would have meant changing 2 in the event of a front puncture.
I'm pretty sure that won't be the only bit of law being ignored, broken etc by quite a lot of vehicles on the road.Their use seems to be misunderstood then…..Ive seen numerous vehicles with them fitted on the road and I doubt it was not under emergency conditions…

I was on the M42, going along at about 70-75 & a Volvo estate flew past me at way over the limit with a space saver on the front, woman driving & a load of kids in the back!
I may have been one of them . . .
Many years ago when I had my first integrale, I quickly discovered the standard wheels were a little prone to pot hole damage -mentioned in the magazine long term tests too. I used to come off the ferry in Hull after workign in Germany, drop off the latest bent wheel with Ian Jemison Engineering outside York and continue on to home near Halifax on the 15" dia (same as the road wheels,) alloy spacesaver that was a 135 compared to the 205s on the other three . . . used to occasionally forget and have to slow down again . . .Mate with a Toyota Previa used to tow our trials cars behind it - and for some reason, thought used gravel rally tyres were a good idea on the back . . . somewhere around Sheffield in the dark and rain, coming back from the Lands End trial, he noticed a lot of white smoke in the mirrors . . . turns out to be the wheel spinning inside one of the failed, overheated, gravel tyres . . . turned out the spare was a space saver . . . and due to his rigorous pre-trip inspection (car on drive - tick!) we discovered it was flat . . . blow it up on the compressor on the trials car, fit it to the front . . . fit the front to to the rear . . . stop at every service to check temp of the remaining gravel tyre on the other side . . . that puncture is the reason I don't slag off the traffic officers you see on the motorways - one of their vehicles turned up pretty quick and parked up behind us with flashing lamps, and held the torch while we changed tyres . . . made it feel a little safer than when we felt terribly exposed on the hard shoulder of the M1 . . .

What size spare should you carry when your wheels are this size? (largest being the rear)
Had this a few years ago when had a puncture and a pre-booked test couldn't cancel. It failed with the following:

- Nearside Rear Tyre(s) incorrect because tyres with different aspect ratios are fitted on the same axle. (4.1.A.1a)

Put two size matching space savers on the same axle and it would pass!
Yes it would!
Given that the 20" and 18" wheels are the same diameter then the aspect ratio will be different, it can't be anything else.

As it is likely to fail then.
I will try to get the wheel back by next weekend. If not I have my other w220 with a good full set of 18s on my lift. I believe it's wheels should fit my 600 as temporary measure.

I would find a way to fail it . or refuse to test it on a roller brake tester

just ring the Test centre and ask as it's standard equipment for the car worth a phone call
