I got a standard 6kg Carter type rubber maul for car wheels that are stuck (known in the workshop at the circus hammer).
Never seen a wooden one...
Never had a lot of luck getting inner lorry wheels off with a sledge hammer either - threaded wheel separator is easy to use - real easy solution to this problem.

That wheel separator is designed to go between the pair to remove the outer. my outer is off, came off no issues. my inner is welded to the hub (i cancelled the callout for the fitter as they wanted to charge me, but they couldn't tell me how much it would be. so much for home start...)

@8ob ... methinks you have more experience than me...
i got the n/s hub off and sorted the abs ring issue. but on reassembly i cant get rid of the play in the bearing!
its the 'compact bearing' design, so no adjustment. just fit hub, do nut up to 300, spin, 350, spin, 1100. but once done i can rock the disk back and forward several mm. there was no play when i started and i did not remove the bearing from the hub....
any ideas?

Worked OK - every time I done it - I have got a good quality Ascot one thou.

Strange, are you a washer short? If it slid off ok to remove abs ring it should have slid back on, try ft instead of the lower torque settings.

Did the cartridge bearing separate when you pulled the hub, as in did part of the inner race stay on the axle spindle?

No, but it's the rear half of the bearing that has play and with it compressed with a bolt and 2 sockets there is side to side slop. After 10 refits and a lot of pondering, I've come to the conclusion that it collapsed when I removed tension from it and it needs a new bearing.

As for the wheel on the other side...
I cancelled the tyre fitter because not only did they want to charge me, they couldn't tell me how much. And on a bank holiday weekend, it wasn't going to be normal rates. I decided if I really had to call them, I would do so Tuesday...
However, with the judicious application of my new 10t portapower....

If its the same as the ones on mine the cartridge bearing is in two halves that meet on a single register in the middle of the hub (no circlips), to get the two outer tracks out of the hub I welded some flat bar across them and then pressed them out, Strange set up going back together as well with orings on the outers that need putting on carefully while pressing them in.

Fairly good idea, spoiled by crappy design and specs.
I wonder how much point stress those wheels will accomodate, though. Bit of a buffer if you're cruising down the road and a wheel comes off because it was distorted.
