Are you not allowed green marker lights? iv seen loads of lorries with them on.

£35quid for me on MOT's too, its great that my mot tester is one of my mates too

Yes I know there are some loonies out there dragging things around that the scrap man would'nt want.But its still a money making scheme.
I only pay £30 for mine but the majority will be paying £50 plus.

My Fiat Doblo failed its Mot the other day on two things...

1) Near side lower arm....fair enough that could be dangerous if left to get worse

2) parking light switch not working....now i have to fix something that ive never used and never will use. to make things worse being a fiat the switch is part of the ignition barrel.

as a fix im not toucthing the barrel and wiring in a new switch off a new relay.

How many of you use your parking lights as i think they were made a legallity in a time when roads were small and not very well lit.

Come on who the hell wants to leave lights on and drain the battery, it just seems daft.

Its not my usual mot place and the guy did seem to be a bit of a jobsworth.

Rant over im off to replace the lower arm

Wow is that a fail then.
When did that one come in and why dont you just remove the parking light switch .

Because its built into the ignition barrel, you have to push a button by the key hole and turn key anti clockwise to remove key with side lights on.
Easier to just splice into the loom with a new power feed to side lights.
Could cost hundreds to sort new barrel as then you get into new keys and transponders and immobilisers.

What a pain in the proverbial.
So I take it this is on the mot schedule to check parking lights. How bizzare when its not a legal requirement to leave your parking lights on.
Its a MAD country we live in .

only white lights /yellow lights to show from front of vehical anyoter colours will fail == If you have blue lights on your washer jets it will fail as well as said VEHICAL Should be as came out of factory when made

Bit of black tape will sort that

Regarding ECU's, easy way around that one, for an older car anyway, is to say the ECU failed, a new factory part was unavailable or was excessively expensive, so an aftermarket one had to be used

Tyres, how can a MOT test fail a vehicle on speed rating when the legal speed limit in the UK is 70 MPH ?! Also, winter tyres, which I now use at this time of year, have a lower speed rating.

All this stuff is chuffing nonsense

At least there is the distinct prospect that the MOT is going to be changed to every 2 years instead of annually !! Halaluya !!

just looked through the mot testers manual and there is no mention of parking lights so they shouldnt have failed it.
check with another mot station then complain
parking lights are still law if your car is parked overnight on a 40mph road

can you imagine the sate of some of the taxis on our rounds after 2 years!!!!

my sister only gets her car filled her car up with water, coolant, wiper blades etc when i service the bloody thing!

taxis and private hire in hull have to have an mot every 6 months they even fail them on paint work

i went in a 57 plate saab diesel taxis on saturday, it rode so bloody hard it was horrible. I asked the driver how many miles and it was only 130k it was a right lumpy old thing.

I suppose it explains it, itself really. Seeing as its a vauxhall underneath!!

I suppose it explains it, itself really. Seeing as its a vauxhall underneath!!

i know a guy that paid 18 grand for a saab 3 years ago just had it valued and he was told 3 grand he was gutted

Not sure I like the idea of a 2-year MOT. If a car can fail after 1 year then it is potentially being driven round for a further 12 months with that fault on.

The government says the 2-year MOT was to help reduce motoring costs, why not just knock £50 off the VED instead of making the MOT stations pay for it?

Im not sure if you heard it on radio1 earlier. They were asking people highway code questions, hardly anyone got them right!

After being out on the roads for years iv come to the conclusion that you should do a re-test evry 3-5 years, yes it would be expensive but they could offset it against the insurance.

What do you lot think?

You'd probably end up with a six year waiting list.

Perhaps a voluntary mini-test with an approved driving instructor? A fail wouldn't necessarily cost your licence, but a pass would get you an insurance discount.

Apologies to any driving instructors reading this, but I guess that scheme would be more open to bribes than a government one.

Not on really. For reasons I won't go into here I had to take my bike test again recently and it was a living nightmare. The cost was one issue, about £750, thats excluding travelling costs, the test changing between re-tests is another. Even though I passed first time, and I consider myself to be a competant motorcyclist, without re-training to comply with all the absurd protocol involved to satisfy the eaxaminer, I wouldn't have had a chance.
Car test is the same, it's now difficult enough to deter many from even attempting to get a licence. New drivers are at an all time low. Good thing though, it should keep the twonks off the road, unless they drive illegally anyway. Retesting would just make that worse.
What is needed is the Police to do their job, instead of tugging people for tax collecting offences, they should tug them for incompetant driving, like not indicating, incorrect lane changing, tail gating, lack of anticipation, unnecessary hesitation etc, etc, Then if the duffers accumulate more than say 4 minor driving errors in a year, they should be retested.

I think magistrates can order someone to re-take their driving test. The police do pull for minor offences, it gives them the opportunity to see what else a driver's been up to.

i passed my bike test at 18 and ahem had to retake it when i was 21 due to a silly speeding incident... anyway i passed both times first time and only cost me bike hire on the first test plus test fee around £65ish and 125ish on the second one as i was recommended to do the police ROSPA course. Ironic as my issurance is now cheaper because of it!

But i fully agree on the police doing there job, my biggest hate is lane hoggin on the motorway, and not indicating. It really drives me mad!!!!!!!!!
