wooz decided not to hijack thought id do the decent thing. lads this job for me has turned into a lot of small pipe runs, all tig at the moment. ill post some comment as i go but heres an idea of what im at. f/j

simon i work mostly in the greater belfast area, now and again i work in bangors ,3m factory. are you a bangorian or a blowin. heres a bit more of that 2in run. f/j

mostly tigged in place then, how do you get comfortable?

simon i have a wee mate ,shug mcabe he has opened a shop at the top of the road from there ,under the windmill., a great tig hand. luke the only thing i can count on as regards comfort is resting the torch hand, i personally hate being forced to weld face on with tig, it does happen given position of the weld, i just find it harder and prefer to position myself for a side on approach. if i do need to weld from this direction i rest on my back knuckle as opposed to the small finger side of my hand, a couple of our lads use finger stalls, i personally cant feed the wire so i just use general gauntlets, perhaps the pics will help to explain better. the first pics are, one of the trapping sets on that last run. f/j

Can you explain to a diy guy why you use tig on mild steel as apposed to stick or mig?

mick there are a number of reasons for the use of stick over tig, and vice versa. customer preference being one, also conditions on site. these pics are from the last job i did, this site was too breezy and the floor made it difficult to move the bottle about so i opted for stick, it is also heavier sch than the last pipe also favouring stick. 84 the machine used on both of these jobs was a genset, therefore scratch start. mick you wont go far wrong with hugh. thanks kiwi. its as i mentioned on a previous thread practice while in the shop. f/j

thanks lads i do appreciate the compliments, and i do hope that these pics can answer a few questions.this , i suppose you could call it a bottle setup, gives an idea the amount of welding in a small area.put up lengths all day and you look like your busy, this is the reality, the flange and reducer are from another small area, this should give some idea as to my preferred gap, its 3.2 with a 1.6 filler. f/j

f/j, what kind of amps do you run on the root with that 3.2 gap (I could drive a bus through that )

sean thanks i get by. this first pic is another bottle, i think i have fabbed about 6 in all ,the gap in pic 2 has been opened out with a 1/8 cutting disc as it closed thus the gap. simon pic 3 gives an idea of my approach, i left the rod in to show where everything is happening, down in the gap. this pic gives the impression that im fusing the rod dead center, what i do is dip on the right hand side, wash the lot across to fuse the other side 2 3 the next pics are what the reducer on my last post was all about. nearly forgot these are all 75 80 amp roots f/j

this is a selection of roots and setups, that wider gap has always been of benefit to me. it really is up to the welder and his preference. f/j
