Mig brazing body panels

Ive tended to use tig to avoid the OP's pproblems.

However, your process interests me.

Do you use it structural stuff like sill etc.

Is it as strong?

I do, but I don't tell my MOT tester I wouldn't use it for a sectional repair on a chassis leg though, I'd stick with er70 for that sort of job.

It's just as strong if done properly.

Strong enough to bend it without it breaking, in my experience.

My old genuine Rover workshop manual, written before British Leyland got hold of it, goes into much detail about replacing and repairing bodywork by brazing, obviously by OA torch back then, even in structural areas.

I have never manged to break apart anything that has been brazed, but I think it would be more prone to fatigue by bending, than steel.

I think there is a bit of misconception around Boron steel - AFAIK it tends to only be used in specific high strength areas, and not necessarily on body panels or complex pressings.
There is a whole range of high strength steels now used on cars all with different properties, some of them can be a right mare to work with - so what tends to happen is anything that doesn't behave like mild gets labelled as "boron" even if they aren't.

Hugh can you hammer and dolly the braze ok? What amps do you use? I have a Portamig 215 and minimum amp are 15 so maybe on the high side? Would like to give it a go.

You sure can. You don’t need any special low minimum amps, I’ve run it successfully in all my various machines to date. Even ran it off my ranger with a spool gun.

The nissan Figaro's I restore have braze joints on the rear quarters panels...can't remember if the roof has them too.

I've used them on door repairs...keeps the temps down. Runs ok in my Kemppi even with argon/co2 mix!

I find it comes in handy for general repairs...doing repairs on galvanised steel...or when I'm not really sure what the part is made of (talking generally fixing here nothing safety critical).

The process being referred to is braze welding rather than brazing but in either case, a metallurgical bond is formed. It is a liquid-solid phase bonding process.

True, it is not a fusion weld, but it is stronger than a panel repair needs (has) to be and is performed at a lower temperature so there is less distortion and less vaporised zinc from galvanised panels.

A hard disk is easier to control, you use the edge and just go at the weld steadily, 45 degrees that way only the weld gets cut down
