Thanks for the suggestions. Like I say, I have a Mitu for special occasions and ideally would just replace the Lidl one like for like but of course they only stock sporadically.

£25+ is pushing it a bit, I'm in the habit of abusing the cheapy set- yep, letting them see grinding dust, scoring steel with them, that sort of mindless vandalism. So don't want anything I'll feel too guilty about.

For in the truck/yard use I have gone back to dial calipers, battery life on cheaper digital s is woeful.

I bought Moore and Wright - I suspect a rebranded Chinese offering but I am very happy with them. Battery life pretty good and it came with loads of spares.
Accuracy is very good indeed.

Have approx 20 sets of these at work, they are excellent for the money, can't fault them at all.

I just use my Mitty's for everything, they are a tool at the end of the day but those m&w are every bit as good for a third of the cost.

That's what I've done

I have 4 pair of them .I do like them but getting to like the digital ones better larger readout and metric and imperial option and can zero from your last cut or measurement . the cheapo ones are very accurate the only downside the critical to set the more expensive ones are a bit slower and easier to adjust but that's no big deal

Do they both read the same? Biggest load of crap I ever did see. Convinced the “Never” sticker was missing on the insize box....

The extra cheap cheapo ones are not ok. Nothing lines up, everything is grabby and scratchy, they turn on on their own if they detect any movement. The Lidl ones are in a league above them and they're nothing special!

Moore and wright £25 ones fizzy posted. Gapped a spark plug last week with them at 30 thou as I couldn’t find my feeler gauges, and then found them an hour later and checked it, it was bang on. I just buy a pack of 20 batteries and leave them in the box with it.

I bought a set of the blue M&W ones years ago - never rated them much as the battery was always flat whenever I opened the box, even if only left for a few days, then they just decided to stop working one day completely

I got a set of Lidl £10 jobbies about 3 years ago, they are still on the original battery and seem to be measuring just fine. They are not as well made as a set of starrets or other decent make ones (fairly obviously, for 10 quid - they have a few sharp edges and are just not as “nice” in the hand...) but I’m pretty happy with them for a cheap “general” set for in the garage.

That’s what I have always done, apart from the cheap Aldi ones I mark things with,

Keep on checking. My experience with them over a very wide variety of their products,is they don’t stay in calibration very well. A company I subcontract for has a lot of their stuff,and quite frankly ,I wouldn’t trust their bigger vernier callipers much more than a tape measure. Probably about a year old,and there are three dead or inaccurate digital verniers already....

the trouble with verniers is that you can always get them to read what you want, I stick with old school ones without batteries as they are accurate enough for most measurements, and if I need to be accurate I'd use a micrometer.

when I worked at company that manufactured metal pressings about 25 years ago, they were having a 3D co-ordinate measuring machine fitted, and it was a piece of expensive and fancy kit. the installer from the company it was bought from said that our works manager was the only man he know who could use a vernier like an adjustable spanner to get it to read what he wanted it to.

I gave up on the cheap and middle of the road digital calipers and bought Mitutoyo. I treat the cheaper callipers with the same respect as quality ones so didn’t see the point in having a set for best. All the failures have been down to cheap electronics and build quality.

How often do you switch it from millimetres to inches-per-Fahrenheit though?!

The EZcal switches from Metric to Imperial or to Fractions of an inch. I am old school and mainly think in Imperial measurements, so I purchased this caliper for its quick conversion capability.
