Any recommendations for a low budget but not aweful set?

I've a good, mitutoyo and I had a cheap set from Lidl, which did the job fine and I didn't mind treating them a bit more roughly. But I've lost them.

Bought what I thought was an equivalent set on eBay but they're atrocious! Am sending them back.

Ditto for day to day stuff. Even cut a set up as a cheap dro which works. Kind of.

Mitutoyo set for 'best '. Got them second-hand on eBay. If you're happy to wait you can get lucky with price

My dad got a set of Moore & Wright at my recommendation. The feel in the hand is really no better than an eBay special set. I would rather have the M&W over an unbranded one but I think that's just snobbish-ness.

mines like chalk and cheese compared to the aldi one i had ...sliky smooth sliding and repeatable readings , im happy with it for what it cost , wasnt alot more than a supermarket one

For in the truck/yard use I have gone back to dial calipers, battery life on cheaper digital s is woeful.

I am all ears on this one, my five or so year old Lidl set have finally given up the ghost.
The last straw was the battery compartment cover braking in two, prior to that the display became almost un readable - probably oil in the display, this is after I they were under reading by approximately half - caused by CI dust and sorted by stripping down and cleaning.
Given what they cost I suppose I should not complain too much but want to replace them with something a little more workshop proof.

I am back to using my old set of verniers but I do miss the instant metric to thousands of an inch conversion which is handy using a 1946 lathe in a metric world.

M&W do two lines of caliper - the cheapies which are proper cheap, and the better quality ip54 ones. They're doing more and more chaiynaa stuff these days, though

I have a couple of sets of Mitutoyo manual vernier calipers and much prefer them over digital, lets face it 99.9% of the time you grab a set of calipers you're only bothered about to the nearest 0.05mm or thou, never any more accurate than that!

Ended up with two sets when someone said they wanted a set and backed out
Not complaining as have a set in the van and another in the garage
There not absolute so need to zero occasionally.

It's worth keeping a well-looked-after micrometer calibration standard handy for checking the accuracy. The cheapo calipers can be surprisingly good, in terms of accuracy, but battery life has always been poor compared to Mitutoyo.

My mitutoyo have had the same battery in for 18 months so I concur.

I bought Moore and Wright - I suspect a rebranded Chinese offering but I am very happy with them. Battery life pretty good and it came with loads of spares.
Accuracy is very good indeed.
Not bad for £26!

Cheaper here £23 and I am trying to stop using Amazon as they have too much of a strangle hold - getting pricy as well.
