Mellor lathe restoration

This is the complete strip down and restoration of a mellor lathe. I have had the lathe for some years but it was missing some of the original parts. I have now collected all the original parts..I will up load pictures of how it goes from this

to this.

Some of the missing parts..the original flat belt pulleys and the headstock gear covers.

It took some time to actually get the covers to fit correctly. And had to drill and tap the headstock for the cover screws.

The original cast iron trumpet stand..drip tray and counter shaft bracket.

First job on the stand was to mark out.cut .drill and tap for the start/stop switch panel.

With the switch panel in place I wasn't happy with how the cables could just be seen...

and the bolts are just to hold it in place

O I decided to make infill plate to hide the cables and still look original.

All the parts now repaired. All the old holes have been welded and ready for cleaning

Counter shaft bracket cleaned and prep for primer

The original switch gear I still have but unfortunately it's totally beyond any repairs. Plus the size of the old switch gear would of made fitting it the the mellor almost impossible. Unfortunately my only option was to fit a modern nvr switch. Had to make a bracket to fit the switch without damaging the panel

Sorry phrased it a bit wrong, I was wondering if you could take the buttons off the old switch gear and use them to activate the new switch buttons which would be behind?

I understand what you mean. Trouble with a lot of old machines is the electrical side. Some ran off line shafts . Some have there own motors and switch gear but over the years they unfortunately break down .

Next job was to get everything in primer and top coat.

The original motor bracket belt adjustment mech had been broken off plus it wouldn't of worked with the bigger motor design. So hade to make a bolt on one.

The bracket took some time to get right as the casting on the counter shaft isn't exactly flat.

It's quite a pretty lathe even before the restoration, never seen one on a pedestal like that before.

The bracket adjusters took some time to get right. All threads are drilled and tap Whitworth.
