M18 battery repair

JOEPRO. Just a bit of information from my experience. From time to time I have been presented with power tool batteries that show 0ve output. It seems the battery failure happens when it is used to drill "just that last hole" when the user is at the top of a ladder with an almost discharged battery. Examination of the battery shows that a thermal fuse on the battery control board had correctly failed. Repairs put things right.

I've never seen a cell with any protection built in, the protection is always external, which in this case, is all on the circuit board.
Lithium batteries can recover voltage quite quickly from totally flat, but how much charge they'll actually accept, and how long they last after being totally flat, are what will ultimately decide if it's worth repairing the pack.

Google protected li-ion cells, they do exist.
Most good quality cells are protected against over charge or discharge by a device built into the +ve end of the cell.
You can reset it do it by careful charging.

Cheap cells often do not have this, leading to fiery results when things go wrong.

I find the opus charger very useful for accurately assessing the condition of a cell. I assess old cells and have them grouped by capacity for use in lower demand items.

I never knew they existed.
However out of the 18 basic 18650 cells they list, only two have protection, which probably gives a good indication of just how uncommon it is.

The only unprotected cells I've come across is in some cheap knock off drill batteries. Everything else have been protected.

After checking the cells in this battery most were 0.00 volts! Indeed only 2x cells had normal voltage. I pulled the 2x healthy cells and its just not worth replacing all cells in this battery as the control board could have been the original fault.

So instead I have bought what is said to be a fully working genuine battery on ebay with a damaged case for £25.



I will swap it into my good case here and take all scrap cells and left over parts to my local council tip and recycle them properly.

Can do yes if any use to you. They are Samsung cells but literally all at 0.03 volts or 0.00 volts.
