Watching another Joshua DeLisle video.
Very well presented and researched.
Some very good tips on etching etc.
Amazing how strong tiny welds are on 10mm steel.
So easy to use and perfect results.

For the ultimate strength he laser welded first then 7018 over the top.

I have followed his videos for years. He is very genuine.

Don't see them rooting pipes or structural steel with a laser before going over with stick in the real world.

You'd be surprised at the latest & impending advances in welding that have occurred over the last five years. Not long ago spooled aluminium welding arrived on the scene . Plasma cutter became the norm , double bug as did inverter welder and so it will be with welding .

I have looked at laser welders and their capabilities and it looks pretty niche to me, the cleaning cycles are impressive I will say.

Never say never. Its still in its infancy at the moment. And the unit he has tested is sub £3k. The professional outfits are even more capable. For people wanting pretty minimal welds they look ideal. Be nice to see some tests on aluminium though.

the day I see one on a muddy site in the rain doing an uphill root off a generator is the day Ill buy two , They seem to be ideal in certain situations , but so is plasma and no one even talks about it , its only because laser diodes are being made now for humble money that they are viable , but laser light still does what laser light always did ,, throw a hand full of dust into the equation and watch what happens ,, Ive owned a couple of lasers in the past , and they were an expensive pastime ,,, in a clean production facility they will be a mighty tool , but you wont be throwing one in and out of a van for many years to come ,,,, although the big laser cleaning machines do make the best sound this side of a light saber .

No it's not. Laser welding has been in industrial use for decades.

Indeed so but fibre lasers are pretty new.
Lasers have a resonant cavity. On older lasers it was usually a glass vacuum tube with co2 or an inert gas. Fibre lasers use a fibre optic not only to guide the light but also as an ultra long cavity. Far more power in a compact and cheaper form.
The new British anti drone weapon is called DragonFire. It is a 50kw fibre laser with fancy optics and controls. You can buy 30kw fibre laser units on Aliexpress for less than £10k.

One concern I have is the much smaller puddle, and the rapid quench stemming from that.
Process controls and much verifying will be needed I think.

Yes you have to be careful. They come with good quality lader block glasses.
The beam is pretty diffused so a few feet away is safe but reflective surfaces could burn your gloves.
Obviously need to be used in a secure area with nobody else present without the glasses.

Seems like the laser is massively dangerous if it fires when not pointed at the work peice, blinding someone or starting a fire, and needs high spec safety measures way above DIY use ?

At the power density to weld metal I wouldnt want to be reliant on a thin slip of coloured chinese plastic.

A reflection many meters away could more than blind you. Eyes are extremely sensitive and delicate.

the one eyed guy I bought my 40w laser and beam table off used to align the beam with a puff of smoke from one of those exotic cigarettes onto the first mirror one day he looked a little two low ,,, back then he had vision in two eyes ,,,, you can guess the rest . He sold the laser and the business . I had to run 63amp 3ph into the laser for power and it took a fire hose to keep the cooling side of it happy , and at the start no one cared what you did with it , two years on and the paperwork was crazy .. mind you it would burn holes in two p coins in the link of an eye , and if there was dust on the end of the fiber optic cable it melted about four inches off it ,,,, then it had to be cut and polished by hand before you tried again ,,,, ah bring back the good old days ,,,,
