Now? IMO cars are a p**stake. The Mfrs love all the electronics and gizmos

Couldn't have phrased it better myself. Body styles are aerodynamically dictated (try towing caravans), so all that's left is gadgets. Just more to go wrong. My Kuga 2009 ....the date in the clock will not go past 2013. To get to 2023 I have to cycle it back and forwards through midnight Dec 31st. Ten times. Dealers don't care. I'm sure there'll be an expensive f'ware reflash available?

Panda 4x4 is a "sit up and beg" driving position. As would be an early quasqui/ RAV4/yeti.

This might be the break point on reliability/ too complex. If a car has a calendar/ date: don't buy it.

It's the seating height. Not a very flexible chap unfortunately. So a low slung car is a no no.
For me the Kuga isn't perfect. But I tend to travel by ambulance these days.

If seating height & driving position are key, then something too high will be as bad as too low, as climbing in won't be on the cards.
I can see why an SUV type thing is considered (Honda CRV though way better in every way than an Evoque - sorry but to me an Evoque makes me thing of Victoria Beckham in Wellies... not bad to look at, but no sodding use for anything practical ).

Worth considering a car that was original body style was for a van though?
I'm sure that entry/egress & seat height are reasons why many elderly drive stuff like Berlingo's, Doblo's, Partners, Tourneo's & such-like? Worthy, relatively inexpensive, practical vehicles that aren't all style but no substance.

A friends nipper is one of LR`s top diagnostics guy, he thinks they are all reliable and reasonable to keep on the road if they are maintained by someone that knows what they are doing. He makes his money sorting out/diagnosing the problems on cars after the local garages have incorrectly thrown thousands of the customers money at labour/parts they didn't need.

True and fair enough.
But, £600 for aftermarket parts to sort out a broken handbrake doing the labour yourself.
Admittedly that could have been prevented by £200 of preemptive maintenance but that's not something that needs doing on any of my other cars..

Its like a lot of these high end vehicles, they are normally company purchases and will be dealer maintained regardless of cost until they are sold on. Ten years and umpteen owners later things are a lot different, they are the sort of cars that have had all the dash warning lights deleted by an oik and will be found on an estate sat at the side of the road sat on bricks waiting for s/h bits to fix them. A friend has just sent back his three month old 4x4 Audi because of numerous issues, got a full refund and bought the new RR instead.

So if you wouldn't be embarrassed at being seen in your daughter-in-law's Cashcow you would be quite happy with an Evoque.

I ended up in the rear seat of a Juke a few years back on a whistlestop tour of Rome on a work trip while waiting for a plane. It was reminiscent of being in the back of an original mini - awful. A pretty pointless design apart from questionable aesthetics.
Work has a couple of pretty recent Navara's - and the build of those doesn't inspire confidence either.

Cashcow - was the biggest selling car at one point - as long as you avoid the 4x4 model and the one with the self destruct 1.5DCi engine in it...

A petrol two wheel drive one is a good choice of car.

Few electrical gremlins relating to stop/start warnings and internal heater blower motors. But "all in all" not the worst car on the road by far.

My Nissan Pickup D22 2 door, had reports of engine exploding due to big-end bearings delaminating. So as a precautionary measure I replaced them with engine in situ. (much more agile in my young 60s).
Needless to say Nissan were totally disinterested. I had a crash in it. written-off, got bodywork done. Then it (like the grandfather clock) it stopped, short never to go again. Electronic issue. Couple of local bodgit merchants gave up on it. Off to pickup heaven.

Yes, he works for a dealer of motors that are traditionally not the worlds most reliable, and that’s the least reliable of any of them.

And before you’ve start, I’ve driven landies since I was a foetus , and I’ve currently got a 110, albeit minus a fair amount of the typical Land Rover “good idea poorly executed” fitments
