Landrover evoque 2013 ?

I just fitted a pair of wiper motors and a loom/plug repair on a 2018 Transit Custom with 30k on the clock - he got a bill for £810 to get his front wiper motors working for an MOT.

2.9 5 cylinder Ssangyong (I got the pump timing tool for these if you need it).

More Ssangyong dealers about than you would think - I wanted parts for one last year - searched Google and found loads that would ship by post to me.

Horror stories with all makes and models now mate. Korean stuff - Kia/Hyundai is good from what I can see.

What's happened to modern stuff? 1990s and 2000s cars were incredibly reliable, cam belts aside they went on forever.

Biggest problem I think is that they are a reverse TARDIS. They are quite a big car on the outside but tiny inside. I honestly think you would have more room in a mini. Same with the rr sport. I get wanting a big car but they aren't.

We have a fl2 and I find this all the time. Big on the outside, small on the inside.

Just the day before yesterday I was trying to get a single 101fc wheel in the boot. No good. I considered putting it on the back seat but it would have been half on the seat, half in the footwell, and wouldn't really have worked.


I remember once carrying 4x 45gallon drums in the back of our 300tdi disco.

We currently own 4 landrovers -

300disco (until I chop and scrap it)

Fl2

The fl2 is the only one that flashes up "reduced engine performance" on the dash board.

And it's the only one I can't get a 101 wheel in the back of.

And the only one I can't run on cheap fuel.

But also the only one with airbags...

I'm not a fan of them really.

Edit - not because of the airbags - airbags are fine, but all the other stuff to break isn't worth the bother for me.

Well thanks for all the input...a real surfeit of comments. But to playdown the hysteria it wasn't a thread bashing Landrovers, but a request for info on the Evoque for chap of 84yrs who was contemplating buying one.
I think the general concensus is no?
I only know about cars I had over years. Most are now none existant. I have a Kuga at present but wouldn't recommend that either.

The engineers got pushed aside by the accountants after the manufacturers got greedy. They've turned a car into the four wheeled equivalent of a washing machine as far as I can see and a washing machine isn't the best thing to base reliability on either
90's jap cars like Honda or Toyota (Nissan before they sold out to the French) are the best combination of reliability and tech I think, anything before is a bit basic and old school and anything much after is way too full of electronic and emissions cobblers.

Arguably (no way to know for sure without an idea what your 84yo wants/needs from a vehicle) - that load-lugging volume and weight & passenger cabin space aren't priorities?
Big distance jaunts ditto perhaps?

A Fiat Panda 4x4 might well be a better choice (& a better poor surface bet to boot)

Best car subjectively I ever owned (& should have kept to the end of its days) was a 1998 Mitsubishi Carisma 1.6 petrol 5-door.
Charisma was absent (maybe the Japanese do have an ironic SoH) - but as a worthy, reliable, quiet, comfortable, fit-for-purpose item for transportation of humans & their stuff - it was superb.

(Later, I sourced a 55K miles, 6yo 1.6 Lancer of 57-plate vintage (before thdy shifted Production from Japan to Hungary or somewhere) for my then partner. I think the Lancer was even better than the Carisma - even now the rare estate is a car I'd happily own a tidy example of).

Now? IMO cars are a p**stake. The Mfrs love all the electronics and gizmos in the name of saving the planet, it gives them a tight grip on the aftersales revenue the car will inevitably generate a lot of, while the cars are very obviously being built with a (very) finite lifespan - it's now a consumer perishable/disposable item, not a consumer durable.
MoT Testers are now issuing Advisories for corrosion once more, on cars having their 1st or 2nd Test. - like a return to the 70's!

It's the seating height. Not a very flexible chap unfortunately. So a low slung car is a no no.
For me the Kuga isn't perfect. But I tend to travel by ambulance these days.
