Thanks will give that a goTo get a hardness round about 52R I heat the face until its dull orange move the torch away a bit and let the heat soak back about 1/4" then I hold it under the bench in the shade when it cools to a blood red I quench it in cold water, that's it no tempering. The science is you have a hard face gradually softening, the bulk of the hammer acts like a shock absorber.
