It depends on what he wants it for - if it's just reading DTC's before he rings you - or if he wants to interact with the systems - height calibration, EPB service mode etc., and obviuosly what his budget is....

Update on today - Oil control valve turned up unexpectedly, it was 'backorder-no ETA' earlier in the week.... Fitted, road tested and collected
Seat motor for RR Sport arrived, correctly labelled but wrong contents.... Owner came & collected as she's going on holiday this weekend - FFS, who books a car in two days before thir hols if it's not a breakdown?

Now the interesting / perplexing one...
L405 4.4TDV8 dropping into reduced performance due to fuel rail overpressure when pushed hard
Replaced the PCV, in the course of which, I found the EGR outlet has been blanked off - now on this engine, unless the software is manipulated, it will ping the EML on in short order with a DTC for boost correlation or EGR flow insufficient.
Carried out road test - all good for three runs, on the 4th, 'restricted performance' & EML appear bang on 4000rpm, same as before. Something doesn't add up here, the typical causes are restricted fuel filter (changed elsewhere ~350 miles ago) defective PCV or restricted return fuel line. Looking at the actual values again, it's strange how the PCV is content to allow overpressure without reining it in, I'm going to do some comparative tests on another vehicle of a similar vintage (EU6) and the same engine.

That blanking plate looks fairly recent - and the EGR on these engines are not known to be problematic, it's a sales car from a local-ish trader who claims they know nothing of it, so it's possible the new owner had the work done, he seems a bit of a 'power driver' as even overtaking, it doesn't fault unless you really really push it.

Removed, nice easy access from here to the oil cooler if needed - not on this MY as only the pre-14MY had issues with the cooler leaking into the VEE

Fuel rail removed - note the caps - the pipes were also capped but every dealer I've worked for, the Workshop manual states 'HP fuel pipes SHALL be replaced if removed, this is due to the conical seats hardening when torqued and re-using may allow them to leak under high pressure. We re-used them, the bill payer was given the option.

Now, I sold my GAPIID tool (should be in every D3/4 glovebox) on here, but he wants a scan tool that’s maybe a bit cheaper but pretty much as good - is there such a thing?

I'd be interested to hear about such a scan tool - some which claim to have functions for calibration of suspension for example simply fail to proceed at various stages throughout the process, simply having the menu option is no guarantee that it has the function. That's what the final straw was for me to purchase my Gap IID. The Gap IID scan tools hold their value well, way better than generic scan tools and I don't see the value likely to drop in the near future much the Nanocom for td5 but even more so as they are compatible with a far wider range of JLR products.

Nanocom is terrible in my experience. Will it connect or won't it? Will it wipe settings or won't it? Will it finish writing that map to the ecu or won't it? I hate mine.

And they have made adding vehicles about as expensive as buying a replacement nanocom.

A lot of issues with suspension calibration are caused by inaccurate measurements - and the tools not being 'clever' enough to interpret the fail routine.
It really does have to be millimetre (actually, 1.5mm) accurate. This isn't unique to LR, Volvo, M-B & Audi all fail if the measurements are off by >2mm. The other issue is mechanical damage, I've seen a L322 where the owner had twisted the brackets to get it 'about right' then brought it in for final adjustment, SDD would not calibrate it even after multiple attempts due to the voltage not being in range for the measurement given. That was very awkward & expensive to sort out.

My experience is only with the D3 but it always strikes me that it's very imprecise to measure from the plastic arch to the centre of the hub. If you're in the wrong place on the arch or don't look at the centre of the driveshaft straight on you could end up quite out!

There's probably some Chinese copies available by now - JLR-205-557B Not really an 'investment' you'd want to make to calibrate your own vehicle once in a blue moon, but it could be a good 'beer money' tool if you know a few people with air suspension equipped LR's
