I've been given a lathe job...

Right! I've had a go here and it's not great!
Took ages to get it clocked in the 4 jaw, the best I can get I within 0.05 mm, maybe warped from welding?
I tidied up the welding first then
tried the large drill but that just jammed with very little pressure.
I got a boring bar out and it's cutting reasonably well once I got passed the square hole!
I'm getting a taper though
Very little stick out on the tool and seems to be the same on light and heavier cuts. Any ideas?

To be fair no! But it's 0.5mm out over 25mm so if it's out it out by miles!
I'll get the level out then cut a test bar tonight if I get a chance.

thats only around 1 degree of out of parallel , although if your not getting it on OD turning that would count that out I guess

Deflection in your boring bar as you get into the material and the weld has made the metal tougher or softer

I put a bar in last night and gave it a cut, 0.1mm / 4 thou out over about 250mm!

So I adjusted the front tailstock end leg with shims (this sounds technical but I just knocked the shims under the leg with a hammer!)
It's now much better but I still need to get some 1/2" nuts and bolts to do it properly.
It's now cutting almost perfectly parallel

It wasn't to bad in the end but definitely cut differently on the hub metal compared to the socket material.
Looks rough in the photo but isn't that bad and I'm quite happy with it
I took a skim off the face while it was in the chuck just to be sure it was all true.

Personally I wouldn't bother clocking it in until after I'd bored out the square.
I'd probably bore it out to within a couple mm of the final size before clocking it in. That way you don't have to worry about the interrupted cut moving it in the chuck, and it means any movement due to stresses being relieved also doesn't affect the final clocking in.

But despite the photography excuse, the first one does look better than I thought it would be.

There's nothing wrong with the headstock squareness on that machine I can promise you that.

I really enjoyed doing that hub, it's the first real chance I've had to use the lathe for a while. It does work nice and smooth and now I've set it up a bit better it's pretty accurate! As accurate as I can be anyway

In a fit of madness I bought this scruffy-looking lathe which is undergoing a refurb and re-scrape. It's going to take (already taken) a huge number of hours to bring it up to scratch but I reckon it's worth it, especially given it's early history. So here it is, as found. It's a poor pic but...

I have both finished!
The second one was harder to turn as not only did the socket have the 1/2" square hole it also had a recess half way through it!

Anyway I'll see if I can get down to him this weekend to see the sawmill
