I was cutting a bunch of 40cm 25mm down to 16mm diameter when it occurred to me that I could just engage the slide nuts and let the machine do the heavy lifting, rather doing all the winding by hand.
Seemed to work great - I'd disengage it when it was 15mm from the end, finish off by hand (settle down, at the back!), back it out, rewind, push in and repeat.
Only when I finished did I suddenly wonder whether it's ok to engage and disengage the carriage slide while the machine is turning
By the way, this is definitely the carriage slide lever & screw, not the thread-cutting one.
