The moral high ground is quite boring, it's all we hear on this forum these days. How about we treat one another as professionals who know what liability is?

You don't have to be a professional Design and Development engineer to know where your liabilities are^^professionals, think there's more chancers, or is just me.....

I don't think I've mentioned any "scraping"?
But we do as a company - I don't, no skill, knowledge or experience - I leave it to the guys who do and have - and very impressive they are. I can slap the requirement on a drawing as I know we need it - but I haven't a clue how to actually achieve it to any usable level - which is one of the things I tell my boss - you pay me to know things - but you also need me to know what I don't know.
Our machines aren't exactly suited to a small bakery in the **** end of Essex", or indeed a large one in the middle of the best bit, as that's not our part of the food and beverage industry.
In a previous life in general engineering with a small back street engineering company, with the exuberance and confidence of youth, I did most things from design, fabricate, machine, fit, commission, electrical work etc in all sorts of industries from military, through automotive, aerospace, food and pet food (and the pet food lot had stricter requirements on entry than the food places!) I know better now
Sometimes you have no idea if a commentator is still at school, about to be loaded into the final furnace, or the nearest they got to engineering was a technical Lego set for their 11th birthday. Maybe I should have put the "Senior" bit in my job title I seem to have gained over time
Its very easy to get carried away on helping the customer, or earning the extra fiver, and forget the realities of the world we now live and work in - flog something to someone, another business, modify something so current regs apply, then be careful - both from the simple thing of avoid the hassle of continued call-backs to fix for free, right through to rather more serious hassle . . .
I recently spent two years working with a very clever Engineer from Virginia, on a very clever, patented, idea - he'd lost pretty much everything, including his health, from a poor business decision and had to put up with working with me (and under an agreement with a large company) to be able to keep above water . . . if he'd just looked up from being an Engineer for a moment . . .

The large 4 disc one we fitted to the machine was over £2k, that was 20 years ago so the cost now would be frightening! But the cost in lost production alone was worth fitting the gearbox, never mind the costs of the good quality inverter drives it used. This was back when cheap ones from China didn't exist so we were using Siemens, hitachi, ABB, etc at over £200 a pop!
The stroters are very reliable but the clutch plates eventually do wear out. We had them on a preventative maintenance program & they were stripped & serviced every few months. I loved stripping them, I think thats why I still love the smell of gear oil!

So back to this. There are no variable cone drives as I was told. There's a belt reduction from the motor to a bank of three chain drive reductions. Final RPM required is 42RPM.
Motor is 0.25kw, frame 71, 1410RPM.
Now on this bit of kit there is also a fan/blower which is single phase. Currently the machine has 3P+N+E. I'm looking for a panel mount main isolater that has 4 poles on RS but they don't seem to be a thing, only ones mounted in a box.
Is having the neutral not isolated standard practice?
Anyhow, WEG drives with new TEC motors and gearboxes should give them all the speed range they need without dropping below 70% of motor normal speed. Motors and gearboxes will be about £500.

I’ve spent ages looking for stuff under the wrong name before, their search can be a nightmare!! Once your in the right area you are generally ok, there may be others that might be better suited to what you want this was just the first one that came up.

Shame. Unfortunately our workshop has a few from when the manager was penny pinching, we are gradually replacing them as and when they let go just out of warranty.
