I have a black 2006 Honda Civic 1.8 VTEC. It is the only one of my cars that actually works. Or it did, until 1 a.m. this morning, when the Police rang my doorbell to inform me that, whilst parked in the street, it had been hit from behind by a drunk driver in a BMW, and pushed into a Council parking ticket machine. The driver is in Police custody, and the Honda is a write-off.
The front has a deep V-shape. I don't have to worry about the cloudy plastic headlight fairing, which was an advisory on the last MOT. No need to polish it with toothpaste next year.
The offside rear spring pan and hub carrier has been torn outwards off the beam axle, and there are creases in the roofline above. The offside rear door will not open. I don't have to worry about the slow puncture in the offside rear tyre any more. Great chunks of the rim of the alloy wheel are missing - I did not realise that they shattered in that way.
I am pretty sure that the car is a goner. It was previously a Cat. "N" ( cosmetic only ) write-off. I saved it from being scrapped by the daughter of a neighbour, fixed it, and got it MOTd in March this year. It owes me £150 in parts and £220 in tools ( a diag scanner ). It has 175,000 miles and therefore has very low market value, probably not much more than the scrap value. It is insured with Hastings Direct, fully comp, £145 excess, renewal due in October, unprotected No-Claims Discount.
I suppose that if I make a claim for this no-fault accident, they will reduce my NCD and hike my next premium? I have heard that the next year's premium can get hiked even if you just notify them, without making a claim at all? Should I just take the battery out, siphon the 70 quid's worth of fuel out of the tank, and call the scrapman?
