Many years ago my insurance paid out on a write off . . and deducted their idea of what the scrap was worth . . . I did suggest if they could get that much, come and get it and I'd go halves on them with it . . . I eventually got the silly scrap value reduced to get a bigger total payout.
Then tied the back axle down to the floor, winched the front out, and carried on . . .

Had similar where someone had claimed I had run them over on a junction up in London . They had got the reg wrong by a single digit . Crazy that my vehicle was a van and the real culprit was a car. Didn’t stop my insurance paying out without even contacting me. I only found out when I looked at the renewal paperwork in detail as my insurance had almost doubled !Informed insurance. yr later premiums through the roof. Its then I find out my Insurance Co, had agreed 50/50 fault. For someone who ran up my ****.
The most expensive claim in the op’s case is going to be for the parking meter. I’m sure that’s going to be thousands to replace

Years ago... An old bloke in a LR90 pulled out on me from a layby. It was a head on to the right, a brick bus stop to the left, or a Land Rover moving (all be it slowly) in the same direction. No brainer IMHO. Probably hit him doing 10mph. Barely knocking the Pigshite off the LR. Bumper/light and wing on mine. Police involved, he was deemed at fault. Yet my Insureance pay out. That must be 40yrs ago.
@reb78 . While I dont pay through the nose for my insurance, I dont use no name companies. Regardless I dont trust any of them.
Due to the "damage to Council property" aspect, I have now filled out the Hastings Direct online claim form.
Based on what I wrote, their script has decided that I was not to blame and that my car is a write-off. Maybe there is some AI in action already ?
There was already text to warn me of loss of my NCD, and possible higher premiums in future.
I do not have "Motorists Legal Protection", but Hastings have passed my claim details to a firm of Ambulance Chaser lawyers.
The Hastings salvage/recovery partner is Coparts. My car will be taken to "a secure storage location" and examined by an expert assessor. They will then offer me a "fair market value" payout, with my £145 excess being deducted ( and no mention of claiming it back from the other driver in this no-fault case ).
I can have a free rental car from Enterprise ( but at the moment my local branch has no cars in stock ). I can keep it for 7 days after I receive the insurance write-off payout. My insurance policy will be transferred to the rental car for the hire period.
I was asked for the policewoman's name, the driver's name, and the name of the taxi driver who called it in. I have none of these.
The Council have removed the smashed parking ticket machine but left the wonky signpost.

If they haven't took your car yet, don't let them. Get them to have an assessor come out and value it. Your car is the only bargaining chip you have, once they have it you can't really argue with them about the value. Your insurance company aren't on your side, the only people they care about is themselves.
My brother just got crashed into a few months ago, they wanted to take his car straight away. He refused. Their first offer was £400, he ended up getting £1550 and was able to keep the car. That was for a 20 year old Audi A4
One of my dads mates crashed a few years ago pulling out of our drive, she let them take the car and recieved £65 for it. That was a 12 year old Audi A4.
Insurance company's will do their best to give you the least amount of money as possible. You have to play them at their own game to make it worthwhile claiming. Its no good them paying out £500 to you, but your insurance going up a £100 a year for the the next 5 years.

Totally agree. Insurance offered me 400quid for my Speedtriple less £250 excess. They settled on £4700 with no excess to pay after a year arguing the toss.

I have just emailed Hastings Direct informing them that the car is no longer on the public highway, is in a secure location, and is SORNed. Based on your advice, I told them that I would prefer to keep the vehicle in my possession until we have agreed a settlement value, and inviting them to send their assessor here. Minutes later, I got a call from Coparts trying to book the recovery. I put them off, and am now waiting to see what Hastings Direct make of this challenge...
( This delay also gives me some time to work out how to siphon out the full fuel tank, and where to store the petrol... )
Until you agree to whatever they offer, and have cash in your hand, it's still your car - you can do what you want with it.
Personally, if I didn't actually need it, I'd decline the courtesy car - if it all goes wrong, you'll be liable for the cost of it. The only one I have accepted (AMG Merc E class for a Damaged Caterham 7 !) was supplied by the third party's insurers once they'd admitted liability.

Mrs Robo had similar when a car hit hers while it was parked on the drive, she had a phone call telling her to have the V5 and keys ready for the recovery truck, she declined and we eventually bought it back and I repaired it.

If you take the hire car, pay the extra for the “all inclusive “ insurance . I think I paid £10 a day around 15 years ago when I needed one ( I expect it has gone up a bit now)
And make sure you go round with them and photograph it too before you take it.

Enterprise car rental have delivered a diesel Nissan Qashqai SUV to me, which I can keep for up to 7 days after I agree and receive the payout from Hastings.
Carwow value my car at £623 - if it was intact. In the current crashed condition, "removemycar" are offering £317 as scrap value. After looking at ads on eBay and AutoTrader, I would have to pay from £1,300 to £1,600 to replace it.
Latest status: it looks like @daedalusminos is right, Hastings are being quite fair. They are offering me £1,382.70 for my car, with no excess to pay.
They know that it was previously a Cat."N" ( cosmetic ) write-off, and told me that the valuation now is 20% lower than full market value. Based on the above asking prices, their offer is actually rather generous - it is £100 higher than the top asking price minus 20%.

its not your fault so tell your insurance that they also need to claim against that other drivers insurance for the next 5 years of damage to your NCD and any premium increase that it may cause
i hate that cop out by insurance companies that slap on a claim on your ncd and then upgrade your premiums when its not your fault
