In need of new socket set

Didn't know that.
Back in 88 I bought a big Bahco adjustable spanner. That when I realised what decent tools are. I still have and it is still beautiful.
This year for shristmas my 18 year old wanted an adjustable spanner. I nearly cried when he asked for that.
I bought him a pair of Bahco's he fondled them and understood them. One proud Pa. I saw him last night sat there fiddling with them and looking at them. Aaaah. That's my boy.
Friends thought I was mad. How much for a spanner. If he lends them out I will kill him. But I know he wont.
A lesson learned.

They seem to start at about £130 on fleabay, I would not be without mine.
The 1/4 set is particularly nice to use.

my mate wanted to get a socket set, but as he rides a bike he said he wouldn't be able to get it home,
so we popped into halfords one afternoon after dropping my son at work.
to look at the 200piece socket set. thats half price at £150.
a young guy opens the cabinet to let use look at it and check parts of it out.
and then tells us if we go on their website and reserve it we can get another £25 off...
so out came the iphone, LOL and reserved it.

You must have asked an arsey dealer most should be fine with it. all he would do is replace the knackered parts and send them off to snap on then he gets a refund, I would have rang snap on HQ and complained

the guys name was pete galloway and he was/is a c0$k of the highest order...

Make sure u photocopy any halfords receipt they fade within months (not sure if this is some form of intentional inbuilt obsolescence!)

We have both halfords advanced and Bahco socket sets 1/4" and 1/2" and they are worlds apart for quality. The bahco ratchet is so smooth and clicks at least twice for the halfords once which is really important when your in a tight spot. The Bahco stuff is really good value for money too.
Every time I'm working at the car i go straight past the halfords to the bahco sets..

While I actually quite like the halfords ones (don't have a socket set but have the ratchet spanners) I checked out the bahco ones on Amazon and for the price I think I would be tempted to go for those if I needed a set. They look to be excellent value, and my other bahco stuff I have is good quality.

Should've looked on halfords yesterday, I bought my boyfriend the 200peice tool kit normally like £300 I think it had half price then extra 10% off. So payed £135 with lifetime guarentee Got some screwdrivers too. Look at the receipt. I still can't believe it lol.

Iv bought from cheapest of cheap up to best I could afford buckets of sockets around the place use mainly draper expert now and im far from easy on them used for lorrys tractors and diggers mainly these days never any trouble with them and really like 12 point sockets
looking a lot at the halfords kits as I want to carry less sets in the van at a time this threads helping a lot with deciding to buy

Got a new 1/4 drive halfords set as the old one is missing too many bits.backlash in the ratchet is shocking,compared to old one of maybe 3 years

One problem we seem to have is that the quality of certain brands may change over time.
But of course, the person on here who tells of their Halfords set that has been abused for 5 years non stop may not know if they've altered since then (not saying they have, I'm talking about the principle here).

I have a brilliant Draper deep socket set and had it some time before finally breaking the ratchet. Purchasing a replacement seems like the obvious idea - what a piece of ****! It was awful to use and fell apart almost immediately. I later learned that Draper had moved production elsewhere between the two purchases! No idea what they're like now, made a lifetime investment instead with Snap-on.


So, I'm not saying to disregard the experience of those who've had a certain set for years, but do be aware that things can and do change and what you purchase now may not be the same as what that person owns.

This is quite true, quality of stuff these days seems to be going down the toilet as we seem to have become a throw away society

My 25 year old half inch drive draper set is mainly still good(few broken sockets) the 5 year old draper expert 1/4 inch set was pants, binned it in the end.

My 1/4" Halfords ratchet fell apart when it was dropped a couple of feet. Bought a repair kit a few months ago (warranty was only on non moving parts) for a fiver and all good again for a while. Now it is dodgy again. The quality of the sockets is fine but the ratchets are rubbish. Give me Bahco any day.

I think it's dependant on who is on the desk when you go in. Basically a lot of the staff know very little about tools.
