TBF this one has 34k and 16 owners and it’s CatD from back in 05 which is a lot of negative, but it is 26 years old, but the sustained damage was just a cracked airbox, and cracked top fairing and a hole in the bellypan and a bubbled tank needing paint. All of which will be sorted by the time I’m done. There is no crash damage here so not quite sure what was claimed against.
The bike will be pretty much all original and mint by the time it’s done. I’ll probably be in it for £1800 inc fresh paint where it’s needed by the time it’s sorted which should be around its value give or take a cpl hundred. Never make much on my bikes as I like them right.
I enjoy saving a bike as much as I enjoy riding them.

Belly pan almost there, nose cone ready for paint and tank now stripped.
Weirdly the paint on the tank had bubbled from leaching ethanol through the nylon tank, and where I popped the bubbles I found the paint very brittle but if I used a hot air gun set to around 450’ the paint would peel then tear like a poor quality vinyl!
Whist the tank is empty and has been breathing for a few weeks, once the paint was removed the smell from the base coat was strong and looking at the primer it had stained it.
I’ve also managed to source a standard can and a set of rear hangers.
So, whilst the tank is pretty much ready to prep for paint, I’m wondering if it would be worthwhile base coating with epoxy after keying up the tank before priming and painting, after all, products like flowliner and Caswell are epoxy products. I’m just not fussy lining the tank and 3rd party companies don’t seem to like treating plastic tanks.
Anyone have an opinion or tried either procedures?

Upper fairing, tank, bellypan and seat cowl (all plastic welded, filled and smoothed ready for final prep) was £360. That was basically go over everything, filler primer, block it back, top coat (both sides, but obviously the underside was minimal prep and the underside was done while the topside was in primer) then top coat, align decals to my other tank then lacquer it all in. A good price I thought.

Just ordered a fuel filter from eBay (
) and SBS sintered pads from Bikespeed UK (£39 for both calipers). Forks off tomorrow with any luck, strip, prep, paint the same as my other set, fresh seals and oil then refit all plastics before its mot.

I really do like this bike and aside from its history, mileage and number of owners it was almost the perfect steed, until two weeks ago.
When riding, every once in a while it would give a small plume of smoke at junctions or when I pulled up somewhere. Stripped the fairings to find the cam cover retaining bolts were missing an oil seal and pooling oil until it ran into the exhaust. I say missing, it was on the stem of another bolt which already had one fitted!!!!!!!
This lead to the powder coat on the magnesium cover degrading until it looked poor, so I bought a new cam cover gasket and bolt seals, stripped it back and etch primed before coating with Plastikote black satin.
Very pleased with the outcome. It’s a perfect match for the engine coating.

Then I decided to attack the clutch which had minor slip at 8-10k. Removed the plates, bought new EBC HD plates and springs along with a new gasket.
Whilst assembling I found a 6x10mm washer which dropped from the clutch area. Checked the book to find there weren’t any anywhere in the vicinity, assumed it had stuck to and fallen from my glove and put it back together.
Started the bike (which has been quite rattly since I got it) and there was a light bang before it started but sounded just fine. Took it out for around 50 miles and the only fly in the ointment was a light rattle when taking up drive at maybe 1200 - 1500 revs but you could avoid the noise depending how you fed in the power.
Anyway, curiosity got the better of me and I had to take out the clutch again as it wasn’t like that before. Found nothing! Started to reassemble and found another washer, this time stuck on the back of the pressure plate! Took it all back out and found the PO had put 5 x 6mm washers behind the spring retainers to give it a lighter clutch!!!!
Measured the clutch pack alongside my new one, divided the overall reading by 9 plates and the supplied thickness of 3.8mm each was 3.79 on the old one!!! Minimum standard was 3.69mm! It had a new clutch before I got it!!!! **Language**ers!
The bang seems to have been the cam chain tensioner pushing back! Replaced with a spare and now the engine is whirring not rattling and sounds really sweet except for the fact it won’t start or idle without a whiff of throttle and as its electronic FI you cannot wind up the idle. I think it’s jumped a tooth as it was idling ok with a loose chain!
I need to strip it again to re-time the cams and keep everything crossed that there’s no damage internally! Bloody bodgers! I hate them!

When you said clutch rattle it immediately reminded me of the springs that sit in the back of the clutch basket, which like to break apart leaving "rings" floating about in the sump.

Cheers guys, I’ll see where it goes before digging any deeper though. From running noisy before to running smooth but no idle without a whiff of throttle after changing the CCT I’m hoping it just needs re-timing. Also if it was springs the rattle would be there at idle and all other revs wouldn’t it?

Correct, pulling the clutch in doesn't affect those springs. Nice video here showing them
Are the vacuum pipes all connected correctly, and none being perished causing a leak? I know this caused me some idling issues when I had mine.
