I bought a damaged new chassis. The damage was to the rear tank supports I wasn’t using.

I capped and welded up every hole in the chassis surplus the requirements, bar the loom holes, these were used to fill each rail with about a gallon of oil. The holes were then covered with access plates.

You can see a loom hole, bottom of picture with the 4 rivets



Note the expanding foam, in the jack points. I took that out

Chassis rails are well a patch work quilt in some places which me having a bit of a thing a bout doing repairs properly and being a bit ocd about work is doing my nut in, dumb irons rear cross member, main out riggers are both fairly new but need taking off and doing properly, quite a few holes in quite a few places but will manage. Did think about a galv chassis but in the end decided against it as I did want to add some custom extras which I didn't want to go messing around grinding off galv etc to do.

I feel the pain. Currently trying to work out what to do with my 110 here - the chassis isn't too bad but it does need a bit of work around the dumb irons and although the rear crossmember isn't as bad as some it will need done as well in a bit, plus a rear body crossmember. Already done a full rebuild 15 years ago on a '89 110 with pretty much everything steel sent to Elgin to be galvanised and know how much that cost, it hasn't lost any value but I don't really have the time or cash to do that again just now.

Which galvanisers did you use in Elgin as that's not to far away for me if I need stuff doing.

Years since I've been there as I'm on the other side of the country now but first class service back in the day, they knew how to deal with the bits given to them and return them straight and shiny. Didn't seem to matter how much I dropped off it was always the same price, so get everything together and get it all done at once rather than dribs and drabs. Did big bits like bulkhead as well as cappings, door frames, brackets etc.

I think Richards chassis problems are mainly down to the fact they replicate the factory exactly its all the internal gusseted etc which just traps water and doesn't really let the galv flow around it and gain proper coverage.

I wonder if Marsland are any better, I believe they use C channel welded together, as opposed to Richards who make a box with 4 sides of plate...However Marsland are 2mm vs the 2.5mm richards.

I don't know to be honest when I was looking at it all designa seemed to be the best they went with 3mm c section all round and dispensed with a lot of the internal gussets eliminating a lot of the water traps.
