The inside yes. The smooth side is not suppose to get greased as it makes it harder to pull the rope out on free spool. If i heated it up in the oven and dropped it into oil would it absorb some.

Old engine oil is good, but the fumes are not nice.

Does the oil need to be heated or used cold. I know for quenching it is better hot.

For using as a a carbon lubricant, cold is better. The metal should be hot to drive trapped moisture out, boiling spit.

That way it draws in the oil, but does not quench the metal.

Sorry I have my H&S head on .
Old oil is classified as cancer causing.
In line, as for good advice I thought it would be wise to mention it.
But we all are safety awear on this site.
