My old Dad used to make green tomato chutney - I was delicious! I’ll see if I have the recipe still

Still waiting for a green tomato chutney recipe but can't find any recommended ones yet. Think this is one I've used several times 175g/6oz light brown sugar

• 150ml/5fl oz white wine vinegar
• 2 shallots , peeled, finely chopped
• 1 garlic clove, peeled, finely chopped
• 2cm/¾in piece fresh root ginger, peeled, finely grated
• 1/4 red chilli, finely chopped
• 125g/4½oz sultanas
• 600g/1lb 5oz green tomatoes, quartered
• half a courgette to give it mush

Think this is one I've used several times Keep stirring so it won't stick in a heavy pan once bubbling reduce to low simmer . when almost cold add & stir in 1 egg cup of a decent whiskey (not super market gut rot ) . Jar up and let it mature for 10 month to three years .

Mum's Tomato Chutney

5lb Tomatoes
1lb Onion
1/2oz Salt
1/2oz Pickling Spice
1pint Pickling Vinegar
1lb Soft Brown Sugar

Chop onion, cook in a little water till tender (5 to 10 minutes) while stirring.
Add chopped tomatoes, salt & spices.
Simmer until tender (10 to 15 minutes) while stirring.
Add vinegar and sugar.
Boil to reduce (1 to 1 1/2 hour, possibly 2 hours) while stirring.
Bottle while hot.

Makes 6lb.
Can use either green or red tomatoes.

Thank for the suggestions on the roots, I have more to remove so I'll try some of them out. It's a pity it was sunny on Sunday because the tree looked quite nice, but there is one root going off under the wall, so it had to come out. Also that tree, and it's mates, have grouped together in one corner and it's killing off all the stuff underneath it. I have two Sycamores growing, both in places that I don't want them, one under a bush that's quite nice so I hope I don't kill that trying to dig the thing out. I cut that off at ground level last year but it's come back because access is difficult.

The one on the left has been in the greenhouse from day one and has already produced three big ones, the pot on the right was outside until last week. Will keep the seeds out of one for next spring. Have a recipe for rhubarb chutney to try next year.

Ammonium sulphamate vs. round-up

The former degrades into harmless fertilizer.
The latter (glyphosphate) doesn't.

It's also _much_ cheaper

You'll regret the Sycamores they can get a 15 foot diameter and grow to 80 foot plus in a very short time . Crop the new growth now and paint the cut bark edge in neat SBK . the plant will take it down as the winter progresses and kill it .
