How Does Your Garden Grow?

I messed up with mine....didn't earth them and now I have 4 foot high potatoes. I suspect it's not going to be a good year for spuds!

Due to extreme laziness I gave up earthing mine up years ago and I can't really tell the difference in yield.

I plant my spuds with a dibber (poke a hole as deep as I can and drop the seed potato in, then cover it over) and they always do OK. If the yield is a bit lower, plant a couple more.

I was told that earthing up is more to stop late frosts damaging the emerging plants than anything else, (but that could be rubbish).

That sounds like me, with my rampant planter. No idea when I look for results or what to do with it now.
My raspberries are a disappointment as were my strawberries, but my blueberries seem to be doing well. No gooseberries either.

Mostly, I am aching like merry hell after giving my front garden hedge a serious savaging this morning.
Letting the cuttings wilt now, prior to shredding.
Might give the oak in my back garden a light crown lift tomorrow, but we'll see.....

Dont remind me Already on the downward slide and things are getting now better. I joined Double boost for a few months but whilst I am glad John is coming out of his episode I cant find anyone to talk to (Except those who are the main problem).

Anyway I guess I need to prepare to plant in December now..I guess you need to plant inside?

A guy I have a pint with now and again wins all the local shows with his veg, reckons he talks to what hes growing in the green house as he gets more sense out of them, than he does from those in the house!

No need to start garlic off in pots, it just goes straight into the ground.
Make a hole about 3" deep, pop in a clove with the pointy end up and fill in the hole.
That's all there is to it.

Hedge needs cutting but won’t be touching it until early August perhaps later if the blackbirds go for a third brood

I don't usually do that either, though I did a couple the other day. I've dug some up to make room for lettuce, but I don't think they're going to do much.

Planting the rows north to southand earthing them up allows warming sun and light to help the spuds grow well , it also helps them not to get too much water in one go /

Look up some of the massive amounts of spuds grown from one seed potato. Grown in a homemade straw base compost soaked in liquid manure from well rotted liquid manure & seaweed extract .

The bed was made on a flat concrete base . I seem to recall it was done by a German and p[produced a verifies 1000 kg plus .

When my daughter was 6 yrs old I purchased a booklet about growing exhibition quality fruit & veg .. tried runner beans , our longest was 42 inches long but not good enough for exhibiting as it was bananna shaped , got a 19 inch dia Lollo lettuce that kept on giving oodles of sweet sot salad, My onions only came in at 1.5 pounds around 150 of them .

We plant the cloves almost any time of the year but obviously not when it is frosty or under snow . If you find a good bulb in the crop set it aside for seed , then from that stock do the same for the next four or five years each time taking the best for plantings , this will acclimatize the garlic to your garden .
Expect to use new beds each year and give them plenty of composted cattle muck & straw the year before planting ( use it for a potato bed area first )

Grow then in between the ridges of spuds , start before the potato leaf appears .. lettuce take around three to four weeks to develop.
Even less if you sprinkler cut and come again leaf , you can also grow radish on top of the rows as soon as you have put the spuds in .

Two 10 inch rows of lightly sprinkled cut & come again leaf mix usually sees us with all the leaf we need .
