Brought to you as ever from the I have no idea what I'm doing school of gardening...
I see it was December when I was last on my patch digging bean trenches. The ground was too hard (and at the same time clumping) to easily dig. Managed a couple of trenches to depth and chucked in some peelings. Some fresh veg peelings went in the bottom of each together with some cardboard, loo rolls, a handful of bonemeal etc.
Gave up on the other two. Over the last couple of days I've deepened (the remaining) two trenches to again, about 18". Some veg peelings and cardboard went in.
I've then given each of the 4 trenches half a barrow of well rotted compost, ditching the plastic tops, teaspoons and fruit labels which SWMBO insists isn't her doing! I swear, on occasion, she's put the plastic wrapped, gone off broccoli straight in the compost bin!
Raked into / over the lot was the cherry tree leaves from last year's fall and a couple of barrows of horse manure, again well rotted.
This morning I started to turnover the top layer and get some air in with a view to distributing & raking it all level.
I don't have a decent garden fork, just a couple of inherited "old man", stand upright tiller things. Not sure if that tool is deep enough but anything more strenuous and I reckon my back would protest even more than it is.
Not sure whether, once dug over to cover the lot with a black tarp or weighted old grow backs until planting time?
Whatever it's very therapeutic. Looking like it's turning into a cracking day here. Just right for digging. A black coffee on hand, Sun's coming up, cats are milling about and the buzzards are circling somewhere just in case I have that long hoped for, massive clutcher!
Just realised I forgot to bonemeal the second two trenches!
