Hot water fan heater

We struggled last winter to heat our kitchen/dining/sitting room last winter without putting on the wood stove. The main issue is that I replaced the original radiators in the room with "designer" style radiators which just don't have a high enough output for the room size. To get the room warm enough the boiler had to be set to "MAX" which is pretty inefficient.

So for next winter I was thinking of putting in a hot water plinth fan heater plumbed into the gch to boost the room temps, has anyone tried one? I am guessing that the fan noise could be a bit annoying.

myson do some nice kick panel heaters but are expensive . dont buy a cheap one there crap and noisy

We’ve done the same thing, but its at the end of the piping run so doesn’t get the hottest water feed, and needs defluffing regularly. Think of them as putting a hairdryer on its lowest setting on your kitchen floor and you will get a good idea how useful/less they are, the heat exchanger in them is similar to a small car heater one

depends on what size heater u fit. also if u fit an ordinary rad and there sufficient heat in the pipes it will be the same

so let me get this straight you took out a fin panel radiator and fitted it with a fancy towel rail then shoved the boiler up to a higher temp hoping it would do the job ?

would i be right in saying that ?

as thats how i read it
unless your willing to go back to the panel rads then you have no chance and putting the boiler up just wont do it

your really wasting your time and money on buying stupid things just because you wanted posh and then type out a moan it cant keep up

fit more radiators? or bigger ones? or better ones?

when my parents moved into their bungalow it was too cold for my mam, swapped the designer panel radiators (I think that's what they're called? 6ft high, big flat panels/bars) for identical bud double ones (so two rows of panels)

made a massive difference, place is nice and warm now

think they were listed at £600 each to buy but shopped around paid about £250 each


expensive.... but by the time you fit the plinth heater, plumb it up, wire it up, have the noise etc. etc. etc. it's not so bad?

Look on Ebay for water to air heat exchanger units with a fan, i got 2 for £200 they are more commercial but the have been boxed in, the fan noise is low but don't leave it till winter as prices go up.

Ceiling lowering options?

If you go for 10mm whatever switches and back boxes you need get the biggest/deepest you can, 10mm is not the friendliest to use in domestic situations and puts up a bit of a fight!

for start off the rads in both the bathroom and dining room was under powered in the first place



replaced with just one fancy rad by the look of it





theres just no way that tiny rad would warm that room up unless you started that wood stove not even with the cooker and hobs on the room is just way too big

2 possible places for extra rad is underneath the window and posible with the above pic to the left ?

enclosed rads give off better btu ratio than open ended rads

The other rad is here, the only other option is under the window just to the left as you suggest. No chance at the other window.

The plinth type heater seems like an option depending on how loud they are

Have you seen Thermaskirt rads?

I fitted them in my last place and they were pretty good. They don't give massive heat output but for background heating they're great.

My mate has a plumbing heating business and he has a computer program that works out rad sizes taking in room size, windows, facing direction. Insulation, and after all the calculations he adds 50% because as he says " you can turn down a too big a radiator "

a plinth rad is 4950 btu it can suffer both with fan noise and blockages due to dust and hair

my advice is to use the computer reference of a easy clean filter to ducting then to back of the unit

now you can fit 2 double 300mm height or 400mm by size of window back to back where this window is depending on the depth



then cover it air grills at the front and top or air grills at the sides but note these parts can get hot you will have to use something to block the heat getting to the wood above otherwise the wood will get red hot

Not the way to do it though, and after the 15th June it becomes part of the building regs

I was told many years ago to set boiler thermostat to max. The reason was that the room or rad stat will cut off the boiler when room reached the desired temp. Having lower boiler temp means the room never gets warm enough for room or rad stat to turn off boiler so it ends up running all the time.

swap that one for one 2 or 3 times as wide

as above, you can always turn it down - fit a thermostatic valve anyway?

the hotter you run the boiler the less efficient it is

and a condensing boiler can't condense if it's running over 60'C
