Horizontal mill?

Dad's just sent me an eBay link to a guy selling a 1 horsepower, single phase Brook Compton motor, right near by as well. Apparently it runs very quietly and being of a similar age to the mill, I'll bet that it's got a 3/4" shaft and maybe even the same bolt pattern. Only problem being that it ends whilst I'm gonna be at school.

Watch out it's not a 2-pole motor cos they run twice as fast as 4-pole.

Yeah, it is 4 pole.

I messaged him last night and offered him £40 for it (only as it it said in the description that he may accept an offer) and he replied saying he'd accept the offer. And mum said we can drive over there this afternoon.

You know what was missing from the listing for that motor?

The workshop mug for scale.

Honestly, we drove for nearly an hour just to find that it's about a foot in diameter, has an inch and a quarter shaft and weighs as much as a Lister D flywheel . There's no way it could ever fit in the mill so we left it there and drove all the way home.

There's usually a hoist ring on the top of the motor when they get to that type of size/weight. A good general indicator of size/weight. I bet you'll be checking dimensions and such first thing next time around? We've probably all been there though. An occasion where you turn up to collect something and it ends up being somewhat bigger than you'd anticipated.

Make sure your sat down when they quote you for a rewind!
Might be better to ask them to quote for changing your existing motor from star to delta?

the only time u get a motor rewound is if u cant get one to fit or off the shelf

Unless you know that surface grinder is still capable of accurate work I would avoid wasting your time.

240 volt, single phase, 4 pole, 1-1.5 horsepower. Preferably with a 3/4" shaft rather than 19mm.

I can't tell from the pictures and the description but it's sold as spares or repair, apparently the wheel moves but the table is seized.

Unless you know that surface grinder is still capable of accurate work I would avoid wasting your time.

I don't want it as a surface grinder, it's just a big piece of cast iron attached to a motor I want.
