Homemade jib crane for my lathe and mill...

I'm getting older and don't like lifting heavy things anymore, so mechanical ades are the way forward. Also the house is in the process of being insulated/rewired so an ideal time to pull up the floorboards and install those nice little extras... ...

So out comes the fag packet design, sort of........most of the materials have been acquired

Heavy wall tube for the upright, 7" x 4" I beam for the jib, various bits of bar stock for bearing/pin housings, angle iron for braising and steel plate for top and bottom mountings.

Sure it will fine for what use you want it - but such cranes usually have the taper roller bearing at the top, and the ball race at the bottom.

I agree, but usually the Lifting Beam pivots on top of a fixed upright post, which is bolted and grouted to a huge 1+ cu metre concrete block below the floor depending on the SWL.

On this design the lifting beam and upright are a complete welded assembly, the taper bearing is now at the bottom and a ball bearing is at the top of the upright, with a fixed pin locating from the upper mounting plate affixed to the upper floors strengthened joists. And a lower mounting plate bolted to the floor with a central bearing housing for the outer taper bearing race.

A bit like the A frame lifting beams sometimes bolted to side of the upright universal columns of warehouse/workshops for lifting.

That's exactly the construction of around 30 build bay job cranes we have here, most with a good brace from the jib to the vertical. Top taper roller bearing is tied back to the building structure, the bottom is a simple ball race in a cast iron 4-bolt flange on the floor. I have to admit when I first saw them with the flanged unit at the bottom, I was surprised - but they were here when I got here, and they are still being used 20 yrs later.

I used this heavy wall tube for mine.....hate to waste metal....so robbed it from my pick up....

cant find a photo of it installed but made a heavy plate bolted to the wall.."for the upper support bearing"..then a home made U bracket 100x4mm with a piece of plastic drain pipe for the bearing....
The bottom, I resin bonded into the floor a rounded ended lump 11/2" bar....sticking up 70' Ish mm.....
turned a deep plug to fit the bottom of the tube so the downward weight went onto the ball end...
well greased and then bolted it together....
It got used for the mill, huge magnetic base or again large rotary table... had good 10 maintainence free years of service and transported it here for it's next job....

Bought something like a bench crane off of Fleebay that can use a variety of hoisting gear.
Wasn't too expensive, and has a good solid look about it.
It's stuck down next to the filing machine and the Chinglish wheel.......

Nice work, looks a bit heavy duty. Made a swing jib/engine fixture for my bench, top runner track is only 50mm box section with a home made roller affair for the leccy chain hoist, that can lift a six pot cummins onto the engine fixture. With this type of lift its the top mount that needs a bit of thought, mine is tethered/bolted to the build steels.

With this type of lift its the top mount that needs a bit of thought, mine is tethered/bolted to the build steels.

Looks a bit light/thin for a complete 6 pot cummins, but if it works.... for you...

My build is made from leftovers from other projects, the only thing I'd change is the "I" beam for a smaller one, but 7 x 4 seems to be the smallest one in general availability/use.

PS. Do I detect a 5 litre oil container used as a chain bucket on the hoist?

The plan is to mount it behind the lathe to lift heavy stock and chucks on and off.

I still need to work out exactly how I am going to mount it and I will also need a 12V power supply.

This is the conundrum which should be thought of before setting out the workshop, but the problem is, who knows what machines you'll be installing (unless you're moving workshops). Mostly they grown into the available space.
In an ideal world the crane would reach both my heavy mills and the chuck of the Triumph, but as it is this is impossible...
Needs sorting though, speaking with a raised voice and backache is not good for an aging amateur machinist.

It is exactly as you say.
My double garage has never been laid out as a workshop. Machines just started appearing over the years.

Ideally, the whole lot needs to come out and everything re-arranged.

My lathe and milling machine are very close together but I have accepted that the crane just won't quite reach the milling machine table

I am short by about 0.5m or so.

Im in the process of fag packet designing a jib crane for the machine shop of my workshop the main one has 3 rsjs so i can move stuff easily but lifting the rotary table or vices onto the mill is something i dont look forward too now. The roof slopes from just over 9ft to 7 and cant easliy install an rsj now, there is a substantial telegraph pole that acts as a support for the roof in a perfect location though so will be based around that.
Something like this is what i had in mind

It only needs to lift 250kg max and if its 6-7ft long then will reach both mills and the marking out table

I already have the trolley and this to go with it.

A brand new Abus 500Kg 3ph hoist minus the power feed cable and pendant control, purchased on the Bay of Fleas for silly stupid money.... .

All the parts to make the replacement controls already acquired...they cost more than the hoist unit...

PS. Pete... The spacing bushes/washer alone will overload my design.....

No sweat, I rescued them from the scrap bin - we bought them for a job last year, used them hardly at all and they were going to scrap them for being in the way.

If anyone else needs a 1 ton beam trolley and is passing Medway pop in and get one.
