The original front pulley seems to be a two step pulley with steps of (approximately) 3/4" and 1" which, with a 5" pulley that motor had originally (I think) would give speeds that match the rating plate. It had a 2" "sleeve" on top of it. The belt is too ling for the small step but I can use the big step and the "sleeve" to get either 800 or 400 RPM.

EDIT: The belt slips really badly, so much so that it pretty much can't be used as it is. The speeds are far too slow anyway, I need to make some new pulleys. I still like the idea of a Reeves drive but as that's quite complicated I might go for stepped pulleys (with a lot of steps) and a Vee belt.

It works. I haven't touched the settings in the inverter, just sorted out the motor and it came straight on. I'm reading the instructions to see if it can hold settings for more than one motor as it will also be used to power my lathe and hopefully another drill.

If I had a three phase mains supply, would it have this protection?

Yes, its not protection exactly its just an extra safeguard in the event of a fault, plus the fact it wont do your motor much good if the inverter starts sending too much juice down!

Whatever you're reading on the reeves? bin it,there is nothing complicated about the type of drive.

How big is that drill though? This doesn't have the space between the table and the chuck to fit big drills, it's only got about a 1/4" chuck on it anyway. I thought a 1/4" drill in steel wanted about 1000 - 1500RPM

Fair enough, I forgot you had limited daylight above the table although it looks sturdy enough that you could increase the column length and change the chuck to a 5/8" or 16mm one.

I have a few stepped pullies in my junk pile, nothing of huge diameter but I think there is a 2/3/4 Picador pully you can have if its any use. I will need to have a root about under the bench.

It would be quite easy to unbolt the column and put in a riser block in but I'm trying to get a bigger drill to handle bigger drill bits so I shouldn't need it.

I'd be interested in some pulleys, depending on their sizes.

Could you not use your mill for drilling with larger drill bits? ie buy set of large collets and appropriate chuck for the mill.

The mill has no quill feed and little room between the table and the spindle. There's plenty of room with the head swung over to the side, though it would be more useful with an angle plate but still not perfect. Without quill feed there's no sensitivity.

Saves a lot of calculation and gives you the actual speed of any rotating item. I use mine a lot for setting the revs on small engines. A small tip - remove the battery when not using it as there's no off switch!

I find the specifications intriguing

I've got an analogue (Eddy current?) one that works well, provided you can get to the end of a shaft. It also has a wheel attachment so it can measure surface speed.

Gorgeous. Is that a herbert perchance? I've used one with the same gear arrangement and its an absolute joy!

There's a huge Herbert on eBay but the gears are nothing like that.
