The original front pulley seems to be a two step pulley with steps of (approximately) 3/4" and 1" which, with a 5" pulley that motor had originally (I think) would give speeds that match the rating plate. It had a 2" "sleeve" on top of it. The belt is too ling for the small step but I can use the big step and the "sleeve" to get either 800 or 400 RPM.
EDIT: The belt slips really badly, so much so that it pretty much can't be used as it is. The speeds are far too slow anyway, I need to make some new pulleys. I still like the idea of a Reeves drive but as that's quite complicated I might go for stepped pulleys (with a lot of steps) and a Vee belt.

. I haven't touched the settings in the inverter, just sorted out the motor and it came straight on. I'm reading the instructions to see if it can hold settings for more than one motor as it will also be used to power my lathe and hopefully another drill.
