Are you referring to the score marks on the surfaces?Had a ****ty few weeks and this lathe is just ******* me off more and more.
All the reasons I didn’t want the hassle of buying a lathe.
Took the cross slide off today.
Also the two bearings in the metric measuring wheel/hand wheel whatever you call it on the cross slide leadscrew are rusted so will need replacement.
I wouldn’t get disheartened about stuff like that. It just needs a little time spend to remove high spots. The actual finished surfaces will work spot on.
Wear is the problem. When we approach a surface that has been worn out then the surfaces don’t run true and flat. It’s not the case here
You’ll always find dents knocks scratches etc and you’ll no doubt create some more over the years.
Rusty bearings well it would depend on the severity. Do they run smooth. Are they sealed or serviceable? Is it just external rust or are the races pitted.
If it was mine I’d tidy it up then pop it back together and start turning. Any problems that lathe is hiding will come to light straight away the moment you start to turn. Get some stock in the chuck and start cutting.
If the finish is nice and you can hit satisfactory tolerances on all slide movements then the battle is half won.
