It's a pity that we cannot all travel back in time, maybe 100 years back, and see how employers regarded the health and the lives of their worker as "consumables" and how many workers had serious health problems from their work by the time they were 30.

Let alone 100 years, it's only 50 years ago that I was at school and we were boiling benzene in the open lab; of course, it's an established carcinogen now and was a highly suspect liquid even then.

It's undoubtedly true that H&S has been invaded by w*ank*rs, but the idea that 90% of all H&S is bad, I can't believe your are serious.

the Crossley family were good employers back in the day, I recently read one of their staff newsletters from 1963, in it there was an article about an employee that had recently retired, he started working for them at the age of 11 and retired at the age of 77, so worked just under 66 years for the company.

in the 1860's 20% of the company was sold to the workers so was one of the first large industrial companies in the UK to offer a profit sharing scheme to the staff that worked there, also women were paid the same rate as men doing the same job.

yeah possibly, but I think the insurance inspection would demand guards on the press, before H & S would get called in as the result of an accident.

Actually a decent bloke to be fair to him. His father was alright. The ones before that weren’t so pleasant I am told. Fenced off all the common land while the men were away in the trenches, that sort of thing.

Hugh has a head I wouldn’t want! How to make an estate that was designed to run on essentially slavery viable in this day and age. It’s hard when you can’t pay people in coal and tied cottages. It’s falling down around his ears.

They’ve got a massive stuffed polar bear in the drawing room. As you do. Not into that sort of thing but it’s the closest I’ll ever get to one. They are massive. I didn’t realise how massive.

I do have a selection of socks with strange random small holes in the upper foot area that seem to coincide with scars in the top of my feet. I call it "reaction training".
I'm afraid to admit to being a sandal type , yes with socks as non of my employers would allow without .

When I worked offshore we had a reporting system to detail anything that could possibly be dangerous or could cost the company money. It had two 'matrixes' on the back, that had to be used to give a severity, likelihood, probability etc to the report. I can't remember the exact details but in all the years we had that system not a single person could tell me exactly how to use it. Most of us just wanged in random ticks and submitted the report.

Even the company shoreside HES guy came out for a visit and was asked to explain in simple logical terms how the matrixes worked. He couldn't, he just bumbled and stumbled his way to a non finite answer.

Not very long after that the report card changed, in several ways.....

Those are called a Risk Assessment Matrix and a Cost Impact Assessment Matrix, and are very common.

The RAM is usually the likelihood of it happening on the X axis ranging from unlikely to inevitable, then on the other axis is the likely outcome, ranging from minor to catastrophic. Multiply the 2 gives you a risk score.

Cost impact is the same thing. Inputs are the same but from a financial or reputational damage perspective.

You then move on to the mitigation matrix which helps apply a proportionate approach to mitigating the risk. I.e. don’t spend a million fixing a risk which will never happen, and nobody would notice if it did. Slide the scale up as the risk scores increase.

These are basic tools aimed at ensuring serious risks are addressed and the BS stuff dreamed up get filtered out. Works well when used correctly.

At the higher level, H&S regulations over several decades have contributed largely to the decay in thinking. One only had to look at the FB posts during C19 asking about the rules. They absolutely beggared belief cos it took less time to think about it than it did to make a prat of oneself in front of the world.
