i did suggest that but i must admit i haven't got much experience with generators
You can check the windings with an ohm meter.
If you check resistance on the terminal block(the bolts with the Red-White wires and the Blue-Black wires),next to the black plastic regulator box.
With it not running, it should have about .5 ohms on each winding.
You need to check the running voltage on the terminal block pairs.
If a switch or breaker is bad the voltage on the socket is meaningless .
A modern VOhm meter will pick up induced voltages and give erroneous results,if a switch or breaker is open.

me neither .i suppose the fact it looks clean makes you think i cannot be the windings .iam gonna take it to a proper winding place tomoz.hopefully get it sorted

it might be terminal unless you want to use it 110V only

as you measured 113 or so from both windings it does indicate that the alternator is OK and the fault is external. If it is a dodgy winding the re-wind cost will be way beyond what the machine is worth. Small machines are just not worth re-winding.

ok been to the winder today he had alook and said i cannot be the winding they either work or not ,and this is kicking out 50v stil so he said its gonna a good chance the black box on the side ,if not bring it back to him .so gonna try onother black box on it later later to see what happens

ok iam learning quite abit here .and you right it aint the regulator box.tryed a new one today and i also by passed the breakers and it still did the same .iam gonna strip the alternator down tomoz and have alook .i know people say it may not be worth fixing but id like to try .its very often you come across something like this for £40.

yes they are all reading voltage .2 or 3 of them are reading in the 60 and the other/s reads in the 30 v .will have to double check

are we going round in circles? You must measure between 1 and 4 and 2 and 3 only, these are your two windings, you did say in one post that you had 113 v on both?
One other thing is that the engine speed is correct, if it is running slow you will have output problems. I would guess either 1,500 rpm or 3,000 rpm.

i can check rpm later but it does sound good .i will recheck measurements abit later ,when everybody wakes .but it does seem that everything else has been checked ,it can only be winding .i have abit more of an idea of what iam checking now .thanks for all your help so far and to evrybody else
Hello Joe,
you measured continuity on the two stator windings. If you could measure the resistance that would be better, both should be the same. I notice that it is a slip ring alternator, were the brushes free? also check for continuity\resistance between the two slip rings, this is the field winding.
It all looks pretty good internally however.
