Your mill looks very at home on that stand.

I may have had a lightbulb motor regarding the counter balance for the table. The aperture in the bottom rear - I don't think its a motor in the picture at #82 - I suspect its a spring coil for the counterbalance, a bit like a drill press. Then your wire would attach to a drum on that unit, rather than a weight? If it were a motor, it would have no way to connect to the pulley frame which can be see to the rear.

I think that is a good explanation for your version (33?) the stripped down French or Swiss horologist's one I linked to shows the weight, that one also has the same base as mine with no aperture at the rear.

Progress on the Hauser has slowed down again due to actually having some real work to do but just arrived from Ebay, is a very small vice for my very small mill.

For which I will need to make some t nuts and clamps.

Yet another three months pass and my progress with the Hauser seems to be slowing even more.
This weekend I pressed the ER16 collet chuck I had previously bought from Amazon to the W9 arbour I made ages ago.

Which I was very happy with, around 0.15 mm of run out on a milling cutter on the first attempt, I did manage to get that down to 0.11mm by adjusting the position of the arbour in the spindle.


However I am less happy that I have no room between the tip of the 5mm cutter and the machine vice I showed above.
If I can press the two apart again I might be able to gain 10 or 15mm by reducing the arbour and taking some out of the back of the collet holder or I could look at ER11 which would be smaller or perhaps make a arbour with inbuilt collet holder using a bought nut.
Time to put the thinking cap on again.

I trimmed down an ER11 chuck yesterday HSS was struggling rubbing a bit but carbide had no trouble...

I too have a Hauser mill, very different to yours, did they ever build two identical machines? The one I have is similar to the green one on Lathes UK http://www.lathes.co.uk/hauser/page6.html but has the motor bolted onto the heavy main casting. My machine too has lost whatever levers it had for moving the tables, except the vertical slide one. At present I am stuck as the motor is three phase but wired star. I did post about it on here but nobody seemed to know if it should be fed three phase as it is, or if the capacitors, etc, had originally been mounted separate, so 240v and cap wires fed into to the motor. Anyone else got a Hauser with it's original motor? Those tiny and expensive collets that they take are a bit of a pain, I only have a collet for 1/4" dia cutters on my machine.

I believe they could be specified for a certain job and equipped exactly how the buyer wanted. Mine was owned by the Admiralty and it is thought used at Woolwich arsenal for production of time fuses I suspect it would have been one of many all set to do a slightly different task.
As mine is an Admiralty it has a 9mm collet spindle not the more usual 10mm spindle which makes the collets proper hens' teeth.
I think I missed your thread on the motor, were there pictures of the mill too? Off to have a look anyway.

I was wondering how tough it would be to turn though I am now thinking that what I have made would work with the mill in the horizontal set up so I rather than risk mucking it up I may as well make another shorter one from scratch.

What sort of cutting depth are you likely to need? Would Clarkson FC3 cutters help as they are generally quite short?

Good idea @zx9 you could make a FC3 holder whilst making your new collet holder. They all have the same shank size so you'd only need one. (6mm diameter I think?)

Ah right - I did see it, definitely 3-phase and in star, so should be plug and play on 415v.
It's worth taking the links off and checking for shorts between windings (walk a meter along one side of the block) and checking insulation resistance to earth with a Megger before putting it into service!

Ok, it's a 'small' motor, below 10hp, so it's unlikely to be wired for the 'next step up' (I have a 10hp motor in my rotary converter, at that point you start seeing 415-delta, 690-star), small motors are usually 380-415 in star, 220-240 in delta. The Delta wiring is unusual in the Civilised World where we get proper 3-phase, only the Truculent Colonies generally have 200-ish 3-phase, and they don't even get the line frequency right!

As that's an European motor, it'll be wired 415 star (technically 380, but 'harmonisation' now classes them all as 400v +/- 5%), with the option of 220v delta for Very Foreign Parts.

If you were using that motor on a vanilla VFD producing 220 3-phase from 220 single (harmonisation again ...) you'd want it in delta, but from proper 415 3-phase it should be in star (as it already is, convenient, eh?)

How does star/delta change the voltage, I hear you ask (vivid imagination!). Simplest way to understand that is with a diagram: take three lines 240 long, put them in a triangle and measure across the corner points - 240. Now put them in a star (Mercedes badge) and measure across the points - 415. Each winding is still at 240, but with the phase difference of the lines, so in star the voltage at the points needs to be higher to put 240 across each winding. This works for 415/690 too, the same ratio of voltages (square root of three, by geometry).

Star-delta starting is used to reduce starting current draw - using the above 415/690 as an example, the motor is started in star on 415, the motor impedance is higher so it draws less line current (not being the full 690v), then up to speed it's switched to delta and draws full current and can deliver full torque/power. In star each winding has 240v across it, in delta each has the full 415.

Right, so I had got it the wrong way round, motors should be wired star for three phase, and delta for single phase with caps etc. Sorry but the rest of your explanation went right over my head, much as the other explanations I have googled do.

I was watching this thread as it began, but have not in the last year, which is a pity because I possibly could have helped. I have a Hauser horizontal type 33 (P9 collets) and a similar small Hauser vertical mill (the only "name" I know for it is "W10" as that is the collet it takes" Both are basically unused (very sure ex govt storage) and 95+ % original. The horizontal mill does not have the original motor or drive pulleys. It did have one original red plastic handle. The vertical mill is all original except two wooden handles. The original brown coloured handle is on the vertical slide. I am still trying to get the original rotary table which the previous owner kept. The paint colour is original on one mill, but painted over a similar colour on the other. Maybe original customer order?
If I can help with the sizes of levers, close up photos etc I will do my best to help.

What a great project and super job you're doing! It's good that something like that didn't just get scrapped.
This thread makes me wonder how the round bits were made to make the first lathe?! Or the flat bits to make the first mill!? A bit like the Facebook "life hack" videos where someone uses a fully kitted out workshop to make a 5mm Allen key or something!!

Hi Jon, welcome to the forum. It is good to see your two machines and thank you for the offer of measurements and photos unfortunately my Hauser project has pretty much stalled since my posting of Aug last year. Several long stories which I won't go into again but hopefully I will have some space to work on it before too long.

My motor is single phase, and looks contemporary to the machine - its only 1/8th HP, so very 'small' (electrically) . Its a reluctance start motor, so no start caps - it has an extra winding whose inductance and resistance is used to get the phase shift to start the rotating field. Then there is a centrifugal clutch to disconnect the start winding. A side effect of this is that if you leave the motor stalled, it _will_ catch fire.

The terminal arrangement is very different to yours - you have three windings so looks like three phase, and 6 terminals, so if you remove the bus bar you can connect it delta. Any combination will work, but you may have to reverse a winding if it runs backwards. Perfect candidate for a small VFD I would guess.

Unfortunately I cant VFD mine which is a shame. One irritation is that my minimum speed is about 600RPM so using slitting saws is tough. Also may be a problem for wheel cutters. So I guess I will have to get a 3 phase motor for it at some point. Looks like on Jons this is solved by the over-size pulley on the motor end on his 33.
