My sister is supposed to be coming to visit on Thursday. She's taking a train from Northampton. Hoping they'll have found the drain plug by then.

Locally, the road is flooded on the way to my shed. Over the weekend, the council closed it, put up signs and barriers, "Emergency Road Closure". People are driving around them and hoping for the best. People who live near it are annoyed because the larger vehicles that can get through are causing the muddy water (the flood is water that's draining from the fields either side) to wash over their gardens and driveways.

Over the last few years we have so many instances of flooding that everyone involved knows what the problem is but are not prepared to do much (enough) about it.
IF they must build houses on flood plains then build them on stilts as is done in many 3 world countries. Ground floor garage /workshop /utility,first floor living quarters and second floor sleeping accommodation. Done properly I don't see a problem . Might leave a bit of a mess when it dries but better that than total devastation and loss of everything.

my advice is dont build on them as they are on low lieing land therefore are prone to flooding in the first place oh and to clean up a flood plain its expensive but no one wants that expense its funny that because most plants thrive on river areas yet they are classed as contaminated

as goes for the surveyer then its up to them to check far enough back to make sure the property is not built on flood plane land but thats greed so will always be built

but money is money flood planes are taken because someone wants to live near the river well suffer the consequencies of doing so is my opinion

then you have posh areas channeling it into fast flowing rivers as long as its channeled past them they dont care who gets it after that

farmers land is no longer kept as a marsh near the river so can collect water before it hits the rivers nowadays most land is drained fast for crops wheres it going into the rivers and someone is going to get the brunt of the flooding

but oh wait rivers are being shrunk and channeled so speed is gained the posh areas channel it so it becomes even faster

so whos to blame in all of this well waterways the farmers, the posh areas

nothing gets done as everyone passes the buck onto everyone else that includes the waterways the farmers and the posh areas all that have contributed to flooding in other areas all to benefit them

the flooding will be classified as act of god when its man in the first place is to be blamed

homeowners, shop owners, business owners all suffer because everyone passes the buck around imagine how fast tehy would act if the lot of them get a huge fine for there actions

then something might get done

the farmers reintroducing marsh areas to collect water
the waterways reintroducing flood plane areas
the posh areas having to suffer a flood plane area built near them as its a natural flood plane area instead of there council funds funding a river channel to flow the river past them so it gains speed and floods other areas below them

I'll fix that for you,
Ground floor = bedrooms so less electronics to damage if you use a wind up alarm clock and you'll be alerted the cold smelly water and thus be able to check on the next level up.
First floor = garage / workshop with a ramp up to it where all the expensive important stuff lives.
Second floor = living quarters where the wife and kids live.
Roof = ladder access if it gets really bad!

One of the lads at work used to work on a dredger in the mersey, day one they pulled up a ww2 bomb he wasn't impressed.
As far as I am aware its still dredged?

But that is just it, it's backward thinking, not to build flood proof homes, in fact make it law, on flood plains, nothing else but flood proof homes.

With the modern estate house being built with an inside skin of timber & plywood with brick on the outside, what happens when flooded? I can see all that ply falling to pieces, virtually writing the house off. As an aside, a friend moved into an estate house with a wood frame & brick outer & wanted someone to fit a folding roll out sun awning. He was told the wall wasn’t strong enough being effectively single skin & it would pull the brickwork away. No wonder it’s been said we have the worst standard of house building in Europe.

purpose built concrete flood plains can be built and cleaned out afterwards as long as they are fitted with a sluce gate control

poor maintenance of the drains for my own area its once a year if that to clean the drains

all factors in maintaining and slowing down the rivers

All that, and coupled with far too much land drainage installed over the past fifty years.

wheres the fines for the waterways failures in preventing this sort of flooding from happening

wheres the fines for reducing the amount of water thats been drained off of many farmers fields

if farmers dont want the fine then create a catchment area for the water

Even if they build them high enough that they don’t flood they don’t seem to grasp that all the water that used to fill the area their foundations, roads, drives are taking up now has to go elsewhere. Along with the water draining off their roofs and quite likely going straight into drains to the nearest river.
