Flashback Arrestors Placement

In NZ and Australia it's recommended to use them at both ends. I think one state in AU requires them at both ends. The torch end ones are normally a bit smaller and lighter than the bottle end set. If your torch doesn't have any protection built in I would say its a good idea to have them on the torch too to protect your hoses.

Hoses aren't cheap down here in the bottom of the world so the smaller torch end FBA are cheap insurance for your safety and protecting your investment in your gear. I have 30m hose that cost more than a decent set of OA regs not mention I'm not to keen on navigating past an angry flaming hose to turn the bottles off if a flash back were to burst the hoses and catch fire XD

I've gone and started an International Incident.

My brazing set, Javac Edge, comes with torch (gun), hoses, oxygen regulator and two flashback arrestors.
The arrestors, will not fit on the cylinder end before or after the regulators. So this set is specifically set up to have torch placed arrestors.

I'm going to fit a whip and quick connectors at the cylinder, so I could add flashbacks there too. But I'm never going to cause regular wear on my hoses so it's not like a commercial setup, nor will they be used as regularly. As my, being blown up, is quite high on my list of things not to do, I look after things like this.

On another note. Back in the day, when I was a mucker for my Dad, gas fitting and plumbing. It was the norm to test a gas fitting, just fitted, with an open flame. I've used that, terrible habit, often with gas fittings I've done at home and my wife once asked “will that not blow the pipes up”. Well no, it works the same as a gas cooker, and it doesn't blow the pipes up. A newly installed, gas connection, and that would include a new gash in a working pressurised gas hose, will not travel independently up the pipe/hose, it'll just disperse into the atmosphere.
However, you would never go on a fault-finding mission with an open flame, searching for a gas leak. Build up of fuel gases will blow me up.

Getting on for 20 years ago we had a fire service inspection and they told us if there was a fire with acetylene bottles on the grounds they would put in a 200m exclusion zone which would stop most of the businesses on the estate trading and we would be liable for any losses they incurred so we swapped to propane.

I've never heard the term "gun" used for an Oxy/acetylene/propane torch.
Gun, i associate with MIG gun, etc.

First time for I've heard that too, OXY AXE, propane axe, Torch

At the gun or at the cylinder?

Both here, on the torch to protect the hoses and on the bottles for obvious reasons. I have heard stories of catastrophic failures but never witnessed one. An old boy I served my time with always instilled in us to work with extension leads and hoses to your left, more so you instinctively know where they are at any given time. Still do it to this day.

i use em to the left all the time im left handed if i was right handed and held the torch in right hand the hoses would be to the right short and strait down the side not crossed over god knows what thats about shot blasters and firemen dont do it

That's not appreciably different to what they will do for other pressurised gas cylinders (including propane or oxygen), or liquid fuels stored in tanks of drums.

The local Station Manager for one of my old sites made it quite clear that policy around all dangerous goods was to ensure they got enough information to have a solid plan of action, and that for anything involving a risk of explosion or projectile they won't send firefighters into harm's way without a bloody good reason (implied that anything short of people trapped and reasonably likely to still be alive wouldn't meet that threshold), just put a water monitor on it from the furthest possible distance to cool things until the worst of the fire dies back.

In terms of reducing the time and radius of the cordon, being able to share quick detailed info was the single most important thing.
