Remember they have expiry dates , generally 5 year lifespan.

Flashback flame fronts travel down the pipes at the speed of sound and the arrestor stops them right before the regulator.

I've never heard the term "gun" used for an Oxy/acetylene/propane torch.
Gun, i associate with MIG gun, etc.

mine are + 50 witt grenade ones resettable . i test them once a year . pressurise the pipes turn off the bottles and slacken the regulator off. the gas and oxy back flows and trip the arestors proving that they work . re tighten the regs and thats it for another year

There will be someone on here who has used O/A for 50 years with neither non-return valves nor flashback arrestors - with no bother.

If a flashback arrestor is effective, you should not really need two in series but these days, there is very often a flashback arrestor at both ends. The one on the torch is also a non-return valve.

The flashback arrestor at the torch probably stops the 50 year old hose from bursting and causing a fire.
