Fitting double glazed units to old sash and case windows.......

Twiddling my thumbs again today waiting for the delivery of weights that should have been here last Friday so on to the second window.

Raking out the old pointing.

Last pointed in 1955 by a Daily Express reader.

Then onto paint removal from the stone. Couldn't persuade Kim to do this job.

That'll do.

Delivery now due at 6pm.

7 more old sash downstairs to go, two more already double glazed.

Upstairs has 9 more crappy 30 to 40 year old UPVC double glazed units, they are on the back burner for now.

I'll try to get half of the downstairs ones done this year, and the other half next spring.

Oh, I know. I rebuilt and fitted eight of them entirely (as in the frames and the boxes/sills etc) with my father as a youngster. I say 'I' - he rebuilt them, I 'helped' he did one or two a year from when I was about 9 years old. Even built a makeshift jig for them in the end.

My old man had a similar battle, our house was listed and the listing officer was anal. We were supposed to use some specialist company, with pricing per window what the whole house would have been in upvc

So the lead delivery eventually turned up after being resent by Mighton Products. I think the first delivery was nicked.

30kg of lead for the lower sash, I didn't want to just add to the original cast iron weight as they would be too long. Instead I used them for the upper sash.

All done.

The total cost for the materials for the restoration and double glazing conversion was ~£525.

That compares very favourably with the quote I got for a complete like for like double glazed wood replacement which was £3150 fitted.

Will it ever pay back in lower energy costs in my lifetime, not sure? However all the windows do need a lot of tlc so needs to be done.

Sadly your 3150 quote is why most houses end up with upvc. Similar money to your refurb, per window.

but nobody takes into account the cost of the wood and its drying time

then comes making them the added factor of being charged more for electric is really affecting everything

yet everyone sees a high price and thinks im not paying that

I had a couple of big double glazed hardwood windows damaged during a break-in, the insurance had to find a specialist company to make and fit them at a cost of about £6k in the 90's.

Well after 50 days of work spread over the summer, I completed 5 out of the 8 windows. That'll do it for this year, the final 3 next year will seem like a walk in the park.

Real quality work on all eight of the windows, must have been painted by a blind bloke.
