I've bought new parting beads and staff beads with integrated draught proofing from Mighton Products who seem to specialise is sash and case windows.

i wont let mine loose with a paint brush not after id done al the work to make it look good prep and etc all for to save me a couple hours if i dont paint it (and i hate painting)

I’ve made a few sash windows with double glazed units. The weights you need will be very heavy compared to an original Victorian sash, so you have to make sure the pulleys are up to the job, and it’s best to use a decent cord - something like Dynema from a boat chandlers that won’t rot or stretch.

I too hate painting but I have my limits.

I painted all the white woodwork in our old house, then went offshore for a month and left my wife to do the walls in whatever colour she wanted.

I returned home to find coloured emulsion slathered all over my carefully painted woodwork, and all over sockets, switches etc.

“Oh, it’s water based, it’ll wipe off” was her response, when I calmed down enough to speak civilly to her. She hadn’t bothered trying to though.

Only things I can think of, looking at those, is to drill a small hole in the centre of those screw covers, & then either try & hook them out with a pick, else drive the tip of a thin woodscrew through the hole, & see if that'll bite so you have something to pull the cap with.

In the end I drilled into the two holes, they turned out to be caps covering the screws.

On to the top sash today.

It looked like it had been glazed and painted by a blind man.

Yes that is the glass sitting inside the rebate.

Dealing with these security screws was a pita.

MIG to the rescue.

Anyway 3 and a half hours and a headache later, it's done. This one will definitely need some kind of repair/reinforcement to take the weight of the glass.

if you have alot of windows that are roughly the same size you can build some expanding covers while you sort the windows out

all you need is a piece in the middle and 2 sides that slide out

you can also do it in 2 halves as well for taller windows

Im starting with the biggest two first then will move on the next biggest and cut down my ply as I go till I end up with the smallest. Only doing one at a time.

To give strength to the upper sash which needs to hang all the time I channeled out the bottom corners for 3mm brackets.

The old dowels were a bit worn and loose.

I don't have any spares that long but do have a lathe and some oak.

Pressed in.

Ready for primer now.

Top sash primed, fitted with reinforcing brackets, then filled and sanded.

Glass fitted to the lower sash and beads cut out ready for felting when my disc sander arrives.

New parting beads and staff beads with integrated draught excluder brushes, cut out and ready for fitting.

Bottom sash glazed, beads fitted, new brushes inserted and painted.

Top sash glass arrived earlier today, too big, I'd forgotten to take off 2mm per side when ordering. Sent the order in after a few beers when I was in Porto last week.

So out with the router to increase the width and height of the rebate.

All's well that ends well, primed, glazed, beads put in then off to the pub for tea to let the mastic skin over.

Back now for Kim to finish the painting.

Not much going on today, waiting for a delivery from DX that should have been here last Friday. Googled them, their feedback is terrible .

Boiled up some of the painted brass for 30 mins in a solution of baking soda.

The paint peels off easily after that.

Buffed them on the lathe.

Then a final going over with brasso.

Fitted the new pulleys. I didn't trust the old ones with the additional weight.
