Its a lot less shiny than when I put it thick on the panel. Does the glossyness matter? Once its got 6 coats of clear it should look the same 
Spraygun is gravity HPLV, one of these that came with compressor. Fan is large enough, seems fairly even. The problem, is me.

It looks like you are putting it on too heavy from the test board pics that you did, I have never seen base coat look like that. It is normally totally flat.

I agree with all of the above.
Junk the paint and start with paint that is a known quantity.
You will learn nothing from the stuff you are using because there is obviously something wrong with it and you are probably just storing up problems.
If you think putting paint on is hard try taking it off!
It might be a one coat metallic which had the lacquer already in it, but it was useless when it came out and is probably worse now.
Base coat is really easy to apply because you are not trying to get a gloss, just a flat even coat.
Lacquer is where the skill comes in.

I am not going to dump it, I am going to learn from it. Practise is always better than nothing, plus I was reasonably happy with the initial results, if I can keep that once it has the clear I will be happy.
This is an old, crashed, crack repaired panel, Ive got a good new one for later.
Now for more practise, will cheap silver alkyd paint do the gun any harm?
I know not to use hammerite as that has silicone.

Don't know who told you hammerite has silicone in, it doesn't, it would suffer the same effect as other paints

Looks like there is something odd about your gun, its shooting out too much paint or your moving too slow. I have mine wound out three turns for base coat and clear.

quite honestly if the gun is as post 43 ie combined set for like £20 the gun is not going to be brilliant but should still spray. do some pics of different fan and pressure settings on a card. i would ignore that says hvlp gun and up the pressure needs more i think the word is atomisation so your doi is better, or try something like a devilbiss flg gun instead if you can get or borrow and compare the results

Btw the spade was crudely flap wheeled, there is plenty of rough old paint underneath. The back side sprayed ok. Im setting up again in a minute I will do some cardboard and a video.

After wondering about the metalic, I saw poundland now do metalic flake/glitter for paint. I mixed a small amount and gave the spade another few coats. On 1 turn it was just spraying flake, no paint and blocking. 1.5 or 2, and it was flooding out.
The worst bit was cleaning up the mess and the gun! Flake sticks to everything. Thinners will not wash it off. Luckily I have some 50 micron/500 mesh stainless mesh which is able to catch most of it. Never using that again.

Keep making the mistake, spraying with the pot vent closed
Im calling that done for basecoat, it is starting to get quite dark blue. Temp is dropping so clear will be tomorrow.I will do more tests for the clear, I am thinking of mixing at 1:0.7 and 3 turns fluid similar to how I originally done the base, it seems easier to get it glossy.
Yes after this panel is on the bike ( it is the winter/spare), I will be ordering a new gun. Once I have a better idea what I need. Im thinking ANI F150/160/R150 or similar (TGM rates quite highly). Then I will do the new nose cone.
